Oltre «Sorvegliare e punire». Michel Foucault e le prigioni.

Over the course of this thesis, I have tried to work out the ideas and concepts of Michel Foucault in relation to penal institutions. In the first part I have analysed articles, interviews and reports of Foucault's militant activities within the Groupe d'information sur les prisons. The decade after May 1968 was a moving time for prisons in France: in the revolts, reforms and public debate, penal institutions were widely considered and discussed. Based on an outline of the historical framework of France in the seventies, an attempt was made to understand the motives behind the philosopher work and particularly with regards to his first material and then intellectual fight against the prison as an institution. The second part of the work focuses on the historical-philosophical analysis elaborated by Foucault and is based on lectures from the period 1972-1973, main work «Discipline and Punish. The Birth of the Prison» and many more of his interviews and conferences on the subject. In the third and final chapter, I have worked out a critical perspective of Foucault's world of ideas by shedding light on his relationship with historians of the time, broadening the perspective of the role of revisionist historiography in relation to the phenomenon of mass incarceration of the recent decades.

Nel mio elaborato ho cercato di indagare il pensiero di Michel Foucault a proposito dell'istituzione carceraria. Nella prima parte, attraverso articoli, interviste e comunicati ho descritto l'azione militante di Foucault all'interno del Groupe d'information sur les prisons. Il decennio dopo il Maggio francese è stato infuocato per le prigioni: rivolte, riforme e dibattiti pubblici hanno coinvolto gli istituti di pena. Delineando il quadro storico della Francia negli anni '70, ho cercato di comprendere cosa abbia spinto il filosofo di Poitiers a dedicarsi alla lotta, prima materiale e poi intellettuale, contro le prigioni. La seconda parte approfondisce l'analisi storico-filosofica condotta da Foucault ricostruita attraverso lo studio delle sue lezioni universitarie del 1972-1973, il suo saggio più conosciuto: "Sorvegliare e punire. La nascita della prigione" e le numerose sue interviste e conferenze rilasciate sul tema. Nel terzo ed ultimo capitolo ho cercato di fornire una visione critica del pensiero dell'autore descrivendo il suo rapporto con gli storici e, allargando la prospettiva d'analisi, inquadrando il ruolo della «storiografia revisionista» nel fenomeno di mass incarceration al quale abbiamo assistito negli ultimi decenni.
