Arthur Stanley Eddington has been one of the fundamental figures of astrophysics in the first half of the 20th century. In addition to his contributions in the field of astronomical observations, his research relating to the internal constitution of stars was fundamental in the development of astrophysics. But his works in the field of theoretical physics were also very important, in particular those linked to the theory of relativity, of which he became one of the main supporters in Great Britain since the second half of the 1910s, and to quantum mechanics. In this sense, Eddington dedicated the last years of his life to the search for an integration of these two great theories, attempting to develop a truly fundamental theory that would include them. Unfortunately, his death in 1944 and the complexity and obscurity of his last theoretical works meant that the results of his work were, at least in part, forgotten or ignored by his contemporaries. From this point of view, the objective of this work is to consider not only Eddington's contributions in the specific field of relativity theory and quantum mechanics, but also their philosophical implications, also in light of the philosophical reflection that Eddington himself elaborated in some of his writings. The work, in the first chapter, analyzes the first writings on relativity developed in the early 1920s. In the second chapter, the philosophical and popular texts of the 1920s and 1930s are taken into consideration, addressing not only science, but also the relationships between science and religion. The third chapter examines the latest philosophical work, a true summa of his reflection on science and epistemology. Finally, in the last chapter, the latest, great theoretical works are analyzed. The objective of this work is therefore to help direct attention towards a figure whose contributions, both in the scientific and philosophical fields, can be a stimulus for further research.

Arthur Stanley Eddington è stato una delle figure fondamentali dell’astrofisica nella prima metà del XX secolo. Oltre ai contributi nel campo delle osservazioni astro-nomiche, furono fondamentali negli sviluppi dell’astrofisica le sue ricerche relative alla costituzione interna delle stelle. Ma molto importanti furono anche i lavori nel campo della fisica teorica, in particolare quelli legati alla teoria della relatività, di cui divenne uno dei principali sostenitori in Gran Bretagna fin dalla seconda metà degli anni ’10, che alla meccanica quantistica. In questo senso, Eddington dedicò gli ultimi anni della sua vita nella ricerca di una integrazione di queste due grandi teorie, tentando di elaborare una vera e propria teoria fondamentale che le ricomprendesse. Purtroppo, la sua morte nel 1944 e la complessità e oscurità degli ultimi suoi testi teorici hanno fatto sì che i risultati del suo lavoro venissero, almeno in parte, dimenticati o ignorati dai suoi contem-poranei. Da questo punto di vista, l’obiettivo di questo lavoro è considerare non solo i contributi di Eddington nello specifico campo della teoria della relatività e della meccanica quantistica, ma anche le loro implicazioni filosofiche, anche alla luce della riflessione filosofica che lo stesso Eddington ha elaborato in alcuni suoi scritti. Il lavoro, nel primo capitolo, analizza i primi scritti sulla relatività elaborati agli inizi degli anni ’20. Nel secondo capitolo si prendono in considerazione i testi filosofici e divulgativi degli anni ’20 e ’30, rivolti non solo alla scienza, ma anche ai rapporti tra questa e la religione. Nel terzo capitolo si esamina l’ultima opera filosofica, vera e propria summa della riflessione sulla scienza e l’epistemologia. Infine, nell’ultimo capitolo, si analizzano gli ultimi, grandi lavori teorici. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è quindi quello di contribuire a indirizzare l’attenzione verso una figura i cui contributi, sia in ambito scientifico che filosofico, possono essere di stimolo per ulteriori ricerche.
