Cell competition is a biological process whereby cells eliminate their less fitted neighbours. While there is evidence of this happening in vitro, currently it is a speculation that cell competition occurs also in vivo during mouse embryogenesis. Such an hypothesis is supported by a wave of apoptosis occurring in a time window preceding gastrulation. We analysed a new single-cell RNA-seq dataset of cells from mouse embryos at the stage E6.5, showing that in the apoptosis inhibitor treated embryos a new population of cells, expressing markers of cell competition, emerges. We determine the transcriptional signature of the new population, that could reveal the features of the cells eliminated by cell competition in vivo. Moreover, by using physical modelling, we showed that cell competition might play a role in the regulation of embryo size.
