Inclusivity/exclusivity of images in English as Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks: a research study

The primary objective of this thesis is to analyse the extent to which images in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks reflect the diversity of the student population, focusing on several key dimensions of the society, including identity, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, and socioeconomic status. The research study addresses three research questions and focusses on Italian students and their opinions about the visual aids presented in their EFL textbooks. To do that, a survey was administred to three classes of Italian students attending three different classes of Lyceums in the suburbs of Turin and the conclusion deals with the findings drawn from the questionnaire and from the analysis of the visuald aids of the textbooks.

L'obiettivo primario di questa tesi è analizzare in che misura le immagini dei libri di testo di inglese come lingua straniera riflettano la diversità della popolazione studentesca, concentrandosi su diverse dimensioni chiave della società, tra cui l'etnia e la diversità culturale, il genere e l'identità, l'abilità e lo status socioeconomico. La ricerca è sostenuta da tre domande di ricerca e si concentra sugli studenti italiani e sulle loro opinioni in merito alle immagini presentate nei loro libri di testo di inglese. A tal fine, è stato somministrato un sondaggio a tre classi di studenti italiani di tre Licei diversi della periferia di Torino e la conclusione riguarda soprattutto i risultati ottenuti dall'analisi delle immagini dei libri e dalle risposte di tale sondaggio.
