The thesis is structured in three chapters dealing respectively with the historical context, the biography and works of Christa Wolf, and a detailed analysis of the novel under study. In the first chapter, the historical background of Germany from 1945 to 1990 is outlined, starting with the Stunde Null and ending with reunification. The division of Germany into two separate states, the BRD and the DDR, is analysed with particular attention to the socio-political and economic differences between the two realities, as well as how these influenced the literary and intellectual production of authors such as Wolf. In addition, key moments in both German history - the Teheran, Jalta and Potsdam Conferences, the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall - and German literature such as the years of the Wende and the Wiedervereinigung are also covered. The second chapter focuses on Christa Wolf's biography, exploring not only her literary career, but also her involvement in the political and social dynamics of East Germany. Wolf's childhood, spent during Nazism and the war, had a significant impact on her literary production, characterised by themes such as memory, collective guilt and the removal of the past. The analysis includes her most important works, such as Der geteilte Himmel, Nachdenken über Christa T., Kindheitsmuster, Kassandra and Medea, closely examining her controversial collaboration with the Stasi, a decisive factor in the public perception of the author in the period following reunification. The third chapter is dedicated to an analysis of the novel Stadt der Engel oder The Overcoat of Dr. Freud, published in 2010, which is considered a crucial work for understanding Wolf's autobiographical journey and critical reflection on German history and personal memory. The work mixes autobiography, historical novel and psychoanalytic reflection, representing a clash between past and present and between German and American culture. The title of the novel, which refers to Freud's coat, is symbolic and represents the author's psychoanalytic exploration of the past. The novel's main themes include the search for an individual and collective past, the comparison between the two cultures at the antipodes, grief as a travelling companion and the sea of oblivion, a powerful metaphor for the limbo between awareness and removal. La tesi è strutturata in tre capitoli che trattano rispettivamente del contesto storico, della biografia e delle opere di Christa Wolf, e dell'analisi dettagliata del romanzo oggetto dello studio. Nel primo capitolo viene delineato il quadro storico della Germania dal 1945 al 1990, partendo dalla Stunde Null fino alla riunificazione. La divisione della Germania in due stati separati, la BRD e la DDR, è analizzata con particolare attenzione alle differenze socio-politiche ed economiche tra le due realtà, nonché al modo in cui queste hanno influenzato la produzione letteraria e intellettuale di autori come Wolf.
