Environmental Economics in the People's Republic of China and its influences on the Belt and Road Initiative and the future Polar Silk Road

The thesis reports the analysis of a recent increase in use of Environmental Economics in the People's Republic of China and its influence and effects on Chinese economic projects like the Belt and Road Initiative and the future Polar Silk Road. In the first section, we will clarify the dimensions of environmental Economics, with some major macroeconomic questions that define the field of study and the international governance that was built to support it. in the second chapter the Belt and Road Initiative is analysed, first providing information on its creation and characteristics and then focusing on the efforts China is undertaking to render the investment network more environmentally friendly. In the final section, we will move onto the possible Polar Silk Road, a new BRI route to go through the Arctic, specifying the geopolitics of the area and feasibility of a more environment compatible international trade passing through the North Pole.

La tesi ha lo scopo di analizzare il recente incremento di uso dell'Enviornmental Economics nella Repubblica Popolare Cinese e soprattutto quale sia l'effetto in particolari progetti internazionali come la Belt and Road Initiative e la possibile futura Polar Silk Road. Nella prima sezione vengono chiarite le dimensione dell'Environmental Economics con anesse le maggiori questioni macroeconomiche che caratterizzano il campo e la governance internazioale che si è venuta a creare a supporto. Nella seconda sezione invece si analizza la Belt and Road Initiative, iniziando con la sua origine e caratteristiche per soffermarsi poi sui tentativi in corso per rendere la rete di investimenti più environmentally friendly. Nella parte finale si analizza invece la possibile nuova via della (BRI) attraverso l'artico, specificando le particolarità geopolitiche dell'area e la possibilità di un commercio compatibile con l'ambiente attraverso il polo nord.
