Torino e la Dora Riparia. Evoluzione del rapporto tra la città e il suo fiume nel corso dei secoli

My thesis will focus on the analysis of the Dora Riparia river as a characterizing element for the urban and industrial development of the city of Turin: this watercourse, located in a tangent position to the historic center of the subalpine capital, has always represented a characterizing element of the urban landscape of the city, although its functions have changed significantly over time, consequently influencing the evolution of the city itself. The main objective of the research will be to answer the following questions: 1. What are the urban functions that the Dora Riparia river has exercised over time? 2. What are the factors that led the Dora Riparia river to exercise these urban functions? To answer these questions, I will focus my analysis on the period of time that goes from the Industrial Revolution to the Nineties, without however disdaining a detailed analysis of the previous historical period. My thesis will be divided into 4 chapters: in the first, I will analyze the concept of "hydrosocial territory" from a theoretical point of view; in the second, I will outline an introductory historical framework of the evolution of the relationship between the river and Turin, starting from the foundation of the city in Roman times up to the industrial revolution; in the third, I will analyse the processes of strong industrialisation that have characterised the area, leading to the formation of a particularly homogeneous urban environment along the entire length of the watercourse; finally, in the fourth, I will examine the redevelopment projects undertaken by municipal administrations since the 1990s, highlighting how these interventions have led to a fragmentation in the urban and social landscape of the river.

La mia tesi di laurea avrà per oggetto l’analisi del fiume Dora Riparia quale elemento caratterizzante per lo sviluppo urbano e industriale della città di Torino: questo corso d’acqua, situato in posizione tangente rispetto al centro storico del capoluogo subalpino, ha da sempre rappresentato un elemento caratterizzante del paesaggio urbano cittadino, sebbene le sue funzioni nel tempo siano cambiate notevolmente, influenzando di conseguenza l’evolvere della città stessa. Obbiettivo principale della ricerca sarà rispondere alle seguenti domande: 1. Quali sono le funzioni urbane che il fiume Dora Riparia ha esercitato nel corso del tempo? 2. Quali sono i fattori che hanno portato il fiume Dora Riparia a esercitare queste funzioni urbane? Per rispondere a queste domande, concentrerò la mia analisi sul periodo di tempo che va dalla Rivoluzione industriale agli anni Novanta, senza tuttavia disdegnare un'analisi dettagliata del periodo storico precedente. La mia tesi sarà suddivisa in 4 capitoli: nel primo, analizzerò il concetto di "territorio idrosociale" da un punto di vista teorico; nel secondo, traccerò un quadro storico introduttivo dell’evoluzione del rapporto tra il fiume e Torino, a partire dalla fondazione della città in epoca romana fino alla rivoluzione industriale; nel terzo, analizzerò i processi di forte industrializzazione che hanno caratterizzato l’area, portando alla formazione di un ambiente urbano particolarmente omogeneo lungo tutta la lunghezza del corso d’acqua; infine, nel quarto esaminerò i progetti di riqualificazione intrapresi dalle amministrazioni comunali a partire dagli anni Novanta, evidenziando come questi interventi abbiano portato a una frammentazione nel paesaggio urbano e sociale del fiume.
