La scrittura e il mondo dell’editoria in Orlando: a Biography

My thesis falls within the field of gender studies applied to literature and aims to analyze the themes of writing and publishing in Orlando: A Biography by Virginia Woolf (1928). In particular, the idea is to analyze the reflections on literature in the novel and the representation of the publishing market within the novel, a reflection of the author's thoughts. In this regard, the work delves into the comparison between Orlando and other works by Woolf from the late 1920s. Subsequently, the thesis proposes to approach the concept of "Anxiety of Authorship", theorized by scholars Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar in The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary (1979) regarding women writers, to Orlando's character, who experiences his literary aspirations over the centuries first through the male and then the female gender.

Il mio lavoro di tesi si colloca nell’ambito degli studi di genere applicati alla letteratura e vuole analizzare i temi della scrittura e dell’editoria presenti in Orlando: A Biography di Virginia Woolf (1928). In particolare, l’idea è analizzare le riflessioni sulla letteratura presenti nel romanzo e la rappresentazione del mercato editoriale all’interno del romanzo, riflesso del pensiero dell’autrice. A tale proposito, il lavoro approfondisce il confronto tra Orlando e altre opere di Woolf della fine degli anni 20’. In seguito, la tesi propone di accostare il concetto di “Anxiety of Authorship”, teorizzato dalle studiose Sandra Gilbert e Susan Gubar in The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary (1979) riguardo alle donne scrittrici, al personaggio di Orlando, che sperimenta nel corso dei secoli le sue aspirazioni letterarie prima attraverso il genere maschile e poi femminile.
