The engagement between China and Tanzania can be divided into two consecutive phases. The first phase coincides with both countries' socialist periods, from the early-1960s to the end of the 1980s, and is dominated by the strong ideological and political influence of China upon Tanzania. The second, current phase of engagement is characterized by a renewed interest in the relations between the two countries based on a more pragmatic basis. Despite the strong historical ideological engagement and in contrast with the current patterns of investment seen elsewhere in the African continent, Chinese and Tanzanian foreign relations are currently starting to flatten, especially if compared with China's engagement with other SSA's countries.
