In this dissertation I will analyse the main formal aspects of Ian McEwan's novel Atonement and the role played by the British class system in the development of the narrative. The aim of this work is to prove that Robbie Turner's indictment is strictly connected to his low social status and his attempted transition from one social class to another. A further analysis shows that some formal features, such as the adjectives chosen to describe certain characters and the use of first or last names are fundamental to understand the social divide between Robbie and the other characters and their prejudices against him.
