Italiani in Etiopia: memoria e identità attraverso le immagini fotografiche

This work investigates the intertwining of identities that still exist today, despite more than seventy years since Haile Selassie's return to his homeland, between Italy and Ethiopia. Through the study of photographs kept in the private archives of families from the Peninsula residing in Addis Ababa, I have tried to understand the ways, languages, and strategies of constructing Italian-ness and Ethiopian-ness (Grimaldi 2022) among the members of the Italian diaspora and migrant community in the Horn of Africa. To do this, between January and March 2024, I interviewed young Italians, who were born in Tigray and adopted by some compatriots, who, having come of age, decided to ‘return’ to Addis to ‘find themselves’. At the same time, I had the opportunity to talk to the V. family, well-known builders from Biella who moved first to Eritrea and then to Ethiopia between the end of the 19th century and the 1930s.

L’elaborato si pone come obiettivo quello di indagare gli intrecci identitari che ancor’oggi sussistono, nonostante siano passati più di settant’anni dal ritorno di Hailé Selassié in patria, tra l’Italia e l’Etiopia. Attraverso lo studio delle fotografie conservate negli archivi privati delle famiglie della Penisola residenti ad Addis Ababa, ho infatti cercato di comprendere le modalità, i linguaggi e le strategie di costruzione dell’italianità e dell’etiopicità (Grimaldi 2022) tra i componenti della comunità della diaspora e migrante italiana in Corno d’Africa. Per fare questo, tra gennaio e marzo 2024, ho intervistato ragazzi italiani, nati in Tigray e adottati da alcuni connazionali, che raggiunta la maggiore età hanno deciso di “tornare” ad Addis per “ritrovare loro stessi”. Parallelamente, ho avuto modo di dialogare con la famiglia V., noti costruttori biellesi che tra fine Ottocento e gli anni Trenta del secolo successivo si sono trasferiti prima in Eritrea e successivamente in Etiopia.
