Paride: testimonianze e tradizioni mitiche.

This thesis aims to provide an exhaustive analysis of the testimonies and mythical traditions relating to the figure of Paris-Alexander. The research is structured as follows: in the first part, some literary sources, considered important to fully understand Paris’ characteristics, are presented. These sources are divided according to the genre in which they were published: epic and mythological, dramatic, historical and lyrical. The second part of the work consists of the commentary, divided into four chapters. In the first, we analyze the myths relating to the birth and youth of Paris, with particular emphasis on the themes of prophecy and exposition, the character of Oenone and the episode of the judgment of the three goddesses. The second chapter focuses on the traditions relating to the abduction of Helen by Paris, presenting the different versions, and examines the figure of Paris as a traitor to hospitality. Following, in the third chapter, Paris is presented in his heroic guise and his role in the Trojan War is investigated in the various testimonies. Finally, in the fourth chapter we study the question of the double name of Paris-Alexander and we propose some conclusions regarding one of the most ambiguous and controversial figures of Greek myth. Furthermore, during the commentary, we also discuss some significant iconographic sources, which are fundamental for confirming the antiquity and diffusion of a specific mythical fact.

Questa tesi ha come obiettivo un’analisi il più possibile esauriente delle testimonianze e delle tradizioni mitiche relative alla figura di Paride-Alessandro. La ricerca si struttura come segue: nella prima parte vengono presentate innanzitutto alcune fonti letterarie inerenti a questo personaggio, che sono state ritenute importanti per poterne comprendere appieno le caratteristiche. Queste fonti sono suddivise a seconda del genere cui si riferiscono: epiche e mitologiche, drammatiche, storiche e liriche. La seconda parte del lavoro consiste nel commento, che si articola in quattro capitoli. Nel primo sono analizzati i miti relativi alla nascita e alla giovinezza di Paride, con particolare rilievo ai temi della profezia e dell’esposizione, al personaggio di Enone e all’episodio del giudizio delle tre dee. Il secondo capitolo, invece, si sofferma sulle tradizioni relative al rapimento di Elena da parte di Paride, presentandone le diverse versioni, e analizza la figura di Paride come traditore dell’ospitalità. A seguire, nel terzo capitolo, Paride viene presentato nelle sue vesti eroiche e si analizza il suo ruolo nella guerra di Troia nelle varie testimonianze. Infine, nel quarto capitolo viene presa in esame la questione del doppio nome di Paride-Alessandro e si propongono alcune conclusioni in merito a una delle figure più ambigue e controverse del mito greco. Nel corso del commento, inoltre, sono trattate alcune fonti iconografiche significative, fondamentali per confermare l’antichità e la diffusione di un determinato dato mitico.
