West Side Story e In the Heights: tra adattamento e identità

The goal of this work is to explore the fields of adaptation and identity through the study of West Side Story and In the Heights. Both these musicals tell stories about the Latin American community in New York. The analysis of these two masterpieces, especially of their music and choreography, allows to observe the elements and the ways used over the years to represent the identity of the characters. Despite the fact that West Side Story and In the Heights were originally created to be played in theatres, their stories have also been adapted for the cinema. The latest cinema adaptations of both these works were released in cinemas in 2021 and they stimulated discussion of the critics and the public. The idea for the study comes from this debate.

L'elaborato si propone di esplorare i temi dell'adattamento e dell'identità tramite lo studio di West Side Story e In The Heights. Difatti, entrambi i musical raccontano storie legate alla comunità latino-americana di New York. L’analisi, in particolar modo delle musiche e delle coreografie, di queste due opere permette di osservare gli elementi e le modalità utilizzate nel corso del tempo per rappresentare l’identità dei personaggi. Nonostante West Side Story e In the Heights siano nati per essere eseguiti in teatro, le loro storie sono state adattate anche per il cinema. I più recenti adattamenti cinematografici di entrambe le opere sono usciti al cinema nel 2021 stimolando la discussione della critica e del pubblico. Proprio da tale dibattito nasce l’idea per questo studio.
