CENSIMENTO DELLE FONTI ARCHIVISTICHE PER LA STORIA DEL SOVRANO ORDINE MILITARE DI MALTA

The thesis work has as its objective the census of archival sources for the history of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. After a first part dedicated to the institutional history of the Order, characterized by a singular sovereignty configured over the centuries by a two-way system of sites between Europe and the Near East, I proceeded to analyze the archival organization. The Order's central archive was kept in cabinets and divided into sections containing the imperial and pontifical privileges, the registers relating to the peripheral possessions of the priories, the registers of the magisterial bulls, the books of visitationes and the documents of the treasury, with the income and expenditures and was kept in Malta. Today, this documentation is located in part in the National Library of Vallette in Malta and in part in the Magistral Archives in Rome. Since the hospitals and commanderies were located both on the pilgrimage routes to the Holy Land and in the lands donated by the sovereigns of Europe in exchange for military support, their relative documentation is today deposited in as many territories. The research was conducted thanks to the General Guide System, the Information System of the State Archives and the sites of each Archive. For the documentation not conserved in the State Archives, I consulted the Unified Information System of the Archival Superintendencies.

Il lavoro di tesi ha come obiettivo il censimento delle fonti archivistiche per la storia del Sovrano ordine militare di Malta. Dopo una prima parte dedicata alla storia istituzionale dell’Ordine, caratterizzata da una sovranità singolare configurata nei secoli da un sistema biunivoco di siti tra Europa e Vicino Oriente, ho proceduto all’analisi dell’organizzazione archivistica. L’Archivio centrale dell’Ordine era conservato in armadi e articolato in sezioni contenenti i privilegi imperiali e pontifici, i registri relativi ai possedimenti periferici dei priorati, i registri delle bolle magistrali, i libri delle visitationes e i documenti del tesoro, con le entrate e le uscite ed era conservato a Malta. Questa documentazione oggi si trova in parte alla National Library de la Vallette di Malta e in parte presso gli Archivi Magistrali di Roma. Poiché gli ospedali e le commende erano situati sia sulle vie di pellegrinaggio verso la Terrasanta sia nelle terre donate dai sovrani d’Europa in cambio del sostegno militare, la loro relativa documentazione si trova oggi depositata in altrettanti territori. La ricerca è stata condotta grazie al Sistema Guida Generale, al Sistema Informativo degli Archivi di Stato e ai siti di ciascun Archivio. Per la documentazione non conservata negli Archivi di Stato ho consultato il Sistema Informativo Unificato delle Soprintendenze Archivistiche.
