La Sardegna ritratta Frammenti Visivi d’Identità e Memoria tra Antropometria e Folklore (1860-1900)

This research starts from the use of photographs as primary historical sources, with the aim of tracing the visual construction of Sardinia between 1860 and 1900. Through the analysis of popular photographic portraits, costumed images and anthropometric photographs, it explores how these representations - circulating and assuming unexpected trajectories that see them burst into the present - contributed to defining and consolidating a regional and national identity. Photography, with its capacity to immortalise and disseminate faces, customs and landscapes, has played a crucial role in the construction of the Sardinian collective memory, in a continuum between self-representation and representation, between past and present and future.

Questa ricerca prende avvio dall’utilizzo delle fotografie come fonti storiche primarie, con l’obiettivo di tracciare la costruzione visiva della Sardegna tra il 1860 e il 1900. Attraverso l’analisi di ritratti fotografici popolari, immagini in costume e fotografie antropometriche, si esplora come queste rappresentazioni – circolando e assumendo traiettorie inaspettate che le vede irrompere fino nel presente – abbiano contribuito a definire e consolidare un’identità regionale e nazionale. La fotografia, con la sua capacità di immortalare e diffondere volti, costumi e paesaggi, ha svolto un ruolo cruciale nella costruzione della memoria collettiva sarda, in un continuum tra auto rappresentazione e rappresentazione, tra passato e presente e futuro.
