Analisi del sentiment su un corpus di tweet a tema ambientale, con focus su fenomeni di ironia e sarcasmo

The ongoing climate and environmental crisis is having a strong impact on our way of living and imagining the future: influencing international political agendas, public debate, and even our way of speaking. On a subject of such seriousness, which involves social and economic transformations on a very large scale, how much can one joke, and in which ways? This work starts by analyzing a corpus of about 9,000 environmental-themed tweets, based on 15 keywords, ”captured” using the Twitter API, which I then manually annotated and analyzed with Sentiment Analysis techniques. Of these tweets, I focused on the ironic ones, noting their activation (explicit or implicit) and the type (hyperbole, euphemisms, rhetorical questions ...). I then analyzed the relationship between irony and stance expressed by the message, and highlighted the cases in which other phenomena influence its meaning (such as the presence of memes or emojis). Finally, I analyzed and commented on the linguistic and communicative phenomena that emerge from this corpus.

La crisi climatica e ambientale in corso sta avendo un forte impatto sul nostro modo di vivere ed immaginare il futuro: influenzando le agende politiche internazionali, il dibattito pubblico, e anche il nostro modo di parlare. Su un argomento di tale serietà, che implica trasformazioni sociali ed economiche di vastissima scala, quanto è possibile scherzare, e in che modo si ironizza? Questo lavoro parte dall’analizzare un corpus di circa 9000 tweet a tema ambientale, basati su 15 parole chiave, “catturati” usando l’API di Twitter, che ho poi manualmente annotato e analizzato con le tecniche della Sentiment Analysis. Di questi tweet mi sono concentrato su quelli ironici, annotandone l’attivazione (esplicita o implicita) e la tipologia (iperbole, eufemismi, domande retoriche...). Ho poi messo in relazione l’ironia e la stance (posizione espressa dal parlante) del messaggio, e evidenziato i casi in cui altri fenomeni ne influenzano il significato (come presenza di meme o di emoji). Infine ho analizzato e commentato i fenomeni linguistici e comunicativi che emergono da questo corpus.
