Elementi grotteschi nell'opera di Nikolaj Gogol'. Alcune riflessioni a partire dai Racconti di Pietroburgo e dalla commedia L'ispettore generale

The main topic of the following paper is the grotesque. The term, initially used in reference to a certain type of artistic representation, will also find ample room in literature. The concept of grotesque doesn’t have a unequivocal meaning, as it can be seen in the first chapter but it undergoes many modifications during time. Works by European scholars and critics like, Wolfgang Kayser and Michail Bachtin, have been taken in consideration to achieve this overview, and starting from thefirst appearance of this term in the XVI century, where it was used to describe the frescoes of Nero’s Domus Aurea, we will get to its introduction in the literary world. The second chapter is dedicated to the Russian writer Nikolaj Gogol’ and his connection to this concept, in particular, the five tales that make up the Petersburg Tales, and the theatrical piece The Government Inspector are analyzed. Within these various elements attributable to the grotesque are identified, some deriving from influences of previous movements, others in line with the realist mentality that was being born in those years. The various levels in which the grotesque structure is presented within these works are highlighted and a reflection is placed on the author's intentions in using this structure.

Il seguente elaborato ha come oggetto d’analisi il grottesco. Il termine, utilizzato inizialmente in riferimento a un certo tipo di rappresentazione artistica, troverà ampio spazio anche nella letteratura. Il concetto di grottesco non possiede una definizione univoca, com’è possibile appurare dal contenuto del primo capitolo, ma subisce diverse modifiche nel corso del tempo. Per realizzare questa panoramica sono stati presi in considerazione i lavori di studiosi e critici europei, come Wolfgang Kayser e Michail Bachtin, e partendo dalla comparsa del termine nel XVI secolo, dove venne utilizzato per descrivere gli affreschi nella Domus Aurea di Nerone, si arriva alla sua introduzione nel mondo letterario. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato allo scrittore russo Nikolaj Gogol’ e al suo legame con questo concetto, in particolare vengono presi in analisi i cinque racconti che compongono i Racconti di Pietroburgo, e la commedia teatrale L’ispettore generale. All’interno di questi sono presenti diversi elementi riconducibili al grottesco, alcuni derivanti da influenze delle correnti precedenti, altri in linea con la mentalità realista che stava nascendo in quegli anni. Vengono evidenziati i vari livelli in cui si presenta la struttura grottesca all’interno di queste opere e viene posta una riflessione sugli intenti dell’autore nell’utilizzo di tale struttura.
