LA BOLLA SPECULATIVA GIAPPONESE DEGLI ANNI OTTANTA

This thesis is an overview of how Japan’s bubble of the late 1980’s and subsequent economic crash happened. We will explain how the actions of many institutions helped to grow and sustain the bubble. We will also examine the consequences in the immediate years following the burst. First, a historical overview will show the fundamental changes the Japanese economic system went through starting with the Second World War. The switch from a model based on free market economics to a war-economy paradigm with strong bureaucratic influence. The second chapter dives into the details of how the bubble was created. It will explain the monetary policies and actions of major players such as the ministry of finance and the bank of japan, but also investigate the role of foreign pressure. We shall discover how a snowball effect led to a poorly managed spiral of speculation that ended with the crash of the early 1990’s. The last part of the work will deal with the aftermath of the disaster and how it affected the country both policy-wise, and on a more human level; orienting Japan towards the next, unavoidable, transformation.

Questa tesi è un’analisi della bolla speculativa giapponese degli anni ottanta e del seguente crollo economico. Verrà spiegato come l’attività di molte istituzioni contribuì alla creazione e allo sviluppo della bolla. Saranno esaminate anche le conseguenze negli anni immediatamente successivi allo scoppio della bolla. Per prima cosa, una panoramica storica evidenzierà i cambiamenti fondamentali subiti dal sistema economico giapponese a partire dalla seconda guerra mondiale. Il passaggio da un modello basato sul libero mercato a una economia di guerra con una forte influenza burocratica. Il secondo capitolo tratta i dettagli della creazione della bolla. Spiegherà le politiche monetarie ed azioni di importanti istituzioni come il ministero della finanza, la banca centrale giapponese, ma anche l’effetto delle pressioni internazionali. Scopriremo come una reazione a catena scatenò una spirale speculativa che portò al crollo economico dei primi anni novanta. L’ultima parte del lavoro si occuperà delle conseguenze del disastro e di come influenzarono il paese sia dal punto di vista delle politiche monetarie che sul piano umano; indirizzando il Giappone verso l’ennesima inevitabile trasformazione.
