Feminine Hunger. Il cannibalismo come autodeterminazione dei personaggi nel cinema

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze cannibalism practiced by female characters in cinema. The aim is to argue that anthropophagy, when carried out by cinematic heroines, can be considered an act of female self-determination, and, therefore, must be examined by considering the meanings that Western culture, both cinematic and otherwise, has attributed to cannibalism and, prior to that, to the consumption of meat. To achieve this, the first chapter analyzes the earliest forms of cannibalistic cinema, culminating in the period of the so-called Italian cannibal movie of the 1970s, with particular attention to the social context in which it developed. The first part of the second chapter focuses on the meaning attributed by Western culture to a carnivorous diet and, consequently, to meat as food, and how this relates to the male perception of the female gender. The second part, as well as the third and fourth chapters, are dedicated to the study and analysis of case study films featuring female characters who commit acts of cannibalism, always linking these acts to the previous analysis. This highlights how cannibalistic acts are used by these female characters as a way to assert their will to rise above their subordinate condition in a world they realize is still dominated by male authority.

Lo scopo del presente elaborato è l’analisi del cannibalismo praticato da personaggi femminili in ambito cinematografico. La tesi che si vuole sostenere, infatti, considera l’antropofagia come un atto di autodeterminazione femminile quando essa viene praticata dalle eroine filmiche, e che, dunque, deve essere esaminata tenendo in considerazione i significati che la cultura occidentale, cinematografica e non, ha dato al cannibalismo e, prima ancora, al consumo della carne. Per fare questo, nel primo capitolo sono state analizzate le prime forme di cinema cannibalico fino ad arrivare al periodo del cosiddetto cannibal movie italiano degli anni Settanta, con un particolare riguardo anche al contesto sociale in cui esso si è sviluppato. La prima parte del secondo capitolo si concentra sul significato attribuito dalla cultura occidentale alla dieta carnivora e, di conseguenza, alla carne come alimento e sul modo in cui esso si rapporta con la percezione maschile del genere femminile; la seconda parte, così come il terzo e il quarto capitolo, sono dedicati allo studio e all’analisi di film casi studio che hanno come protagoniste delle figure femminili che ha praticano atti di cannibalismo, mettendoli sempre in relazione con quanto esaminato in precedenza. In questo modo si evidenzia come l’atto cannibalico venga utilizzato dai personaggi come modo per imporre la volontà di elevarsi dalla loro condizione di subalternità in un mondo che realizzano essere ancora dominato dall’autorità maschile.
