John Keats: conoscere il poeta attraverso Bright Star

This thesis focuses on the comparison between the biography of the poet John Keats and its film adaptation Bright Star (2009) directed by Jane Campion. In the first chapter, the Romantic movement is introduced. Then, the historical context of the period is presented with an overview on society, economy, and politics. Similarly, the main themes that characterised this movement are introduced. In addition, the text mentions the main writers who influenced Keats' poems will be considered as part of this study. The second chapter describes the figure of John Keats, from his life to his works. Some poems and letters to relatives and friends, which are part of a conspicuous epistolary inheritance, are further analysed. In the third chapter, the last three years of Keats's life are compared to its rendering in the film Bright Star. The film is examined through articles, reviews, and critiques of the film, as well as a careful analysis of the director's choice with reference to the author's poetical works.

La tesi presentata è incentrata sul confronto tra la biografia di John Keats e la sua trasposizione cinematografica “Bright Star” (2009), diretta dalla regista neozelandese Jane Campion. Nel primo capitolo viene dedicata un’introduzione al movimento del Romanticismo, di cui il poeta è un esponente. Sono in seguito presentati il contesto storico e una panoramica su società, economia e politica del primo Ottocento, oltre ai temi principali che caratterizzano quella corrente letteraria. Inoltre, viene fatto un accenno agli autori più importanti che contribuirono a influenzare i lavori di Keats. Nel secondo capitolo la figura di John Keats viene esaminata attraverso la vita e le sue opere. Sono inoltre analizzate alcune poesie e lettere ad amici e parenti che costituiscono una cospicua eredità epistolare. Infine, nel terzo capitolo vengono messi a confronto gli ultimi tre anni della vita del poeta con il film Bright Star. La pellicola è esaminata attraverso la presentazione di articoli, recensioni e critiche sul film nonché grazie a un’attenta analisi sulle scelte cinematografiche della regista rispetto alla poetica dell’autore.
