"Un romanzo e tre generi: Northanger Abbey tra realismo, gotico e parodia"

The purpose of the dissertation is to delineate three different layers of interpretation of Jane Austen’s novel “Northanger Abbey” (1818). Each level corresponds a genre: realism, gothic novel and parody, which will be analysed respectively in chapter I, II and III. By pointing out the main features and techniques of these three genres, it is possible to identify new means through which Austen can convey her views on Georgian society. The combination of these three layers and genres is, thus, the key to comprehend the truths and weaknesses of this historical age, especially as regards women status.

L’obiettivo della tesi consiste nel tracciare un percorso di lettura del romanzo “Northanger Abbey” (1818), individuandone tre piani principali. Ciascuno di essi è associabile ad un genere: il romanzo realista, il romanzo gotico e la parodia. Tali livelli di interpretazione sono affrontati nei tre capitoli di cui l’elaborato si compone, delineandone tecniche e peculiarità che li caratterizzano. Il fine ultimo è quello di identificare i diversi e originali strumenti interpretativi di cui Jane Austen si serve per illustrare la realtà e le debolezze della società georgiana, dando voce in particolar modo alla compagine femminile.
