John Smith e Pocahontas: Tra Realtà e Narrativa

In my dissertation, I tried to give an answer to a question left unresolved since 1600, Pocahontas, did really save John Smith from execution? Actually my purpose was mostly to analyze if the source in question, that is the same John Smith, is really trusted on this issue. Before reaching the historical debate on the matter, I have considered the biography of Smith and the beginnings of the English colonization on the east coast of North America. Next I described the culture and lifestyles of the Powhatan Indians and the relationship between the two civilizations once founded Jamestown. After the meeting of Smith with Pocahontas I examined the informations that Smith himself wrote in his books True Relation of 1608 and Generall Historie 1624on his stay in Werowocomoco. I analized the opinions of various historians through the ages on whether Smith is considered a reliable source or not, and I have concluded that it is presumable that the execution was a misunderstanding between the respective sides. I completed my research, exposing what happened after that incident and in particular, the evolution of the relationship between Smith and Pocahontas.

Nella mia dissertazione finale, ho cercato di dare una risposta a un interrogativo rimasto irrisolto fin dal 1600: Pocahontas, ha davvero salvato John Smith dalla sua esecuzione? In realtà la mia finalità è stata più che altro quella di analizzare se la fonte in questione, cioè lo stesso John Smith, è davvero attendibile su tale faccenda. Prima di giungere al dibattito storico sulla vicenda, ho preso in esame la biografia di Smith e i prodromi della colonizzazione inglese sulla costa orientale dell'America del nord. Successivamente ho esposto la cultura e i modi di vivere degli indiani Powhatan e poi come si sono relazionate le due civiltà una volta fondata Jamestown. In seguito all'incontro di Smith con Pocahontas ho preso in esame le notizie che Smith stesso ha riportato sulla sua permanenza a Werowocomoco nei suoi libri True Relation del 1608 e Generall Historie del 1624. Ho analizzato le opinioni di vari storici attraverso i secoli, sul fatto se Smith sia considerato una fonte attendibile o meno, e ho concluso che è altamente probabile che il momento dell'esecuzione si sia rivelato tutto un malinteso tra le rispettive parti. Ho ultimato la mia ricerca, esponendo le conseguenze accadute dopo quell'avvenimento e in particolare, l'evoluzione del rapporto tra Smith e Pocahontas.
