Crisi e famiglie: tra vulnerabilità finanziaria e cambiamenti nei ruoli di genere

In this thesis I discussed the effects and the impact of the economic crisis on families in Italy, focusing on the redefinition of gender roles. To do so I firstly took a look at the economic situation of families, focusing on vulnerabilities and data on debt and savings. Then I analyzed data on work both individual and into the family. I also described how either the lack of income or the decline in employment could lead to a redefinition of gender roles or not, and I exhibited two theoretical perspectives, the first one of a culturalist nature (where we find the concepts of doing gender of West and Zimmerman and gender display of Goffman) and the second one of an economic nature (inspired by the rational choice and which includes the theories of the availability of the time and of the related resources) to understand how can be divided domestic work and paid work . I made reference to some ISTAT data to see in which direction is actually changing the involvement of fathers and mothers in family work. Along with that I analyzed the welfare policies that target a greater gender equality, views both at European and national level. Finally I analyzed some interviews to understand how the crisis, along with the first parenthood, has encouraged a redefinition of gender roles, looking how it affected the employment of the respondents and their career prospects, how the families interviewed decided to organize their conciliation strategies and what was the impact of the economic crisis on this decision making.

In questa tesi discuto gli effetti e l'impatto che la crisi economica ha avuto sulle famiglie in Italia, soffermandomi sulla ridefinizione dei ruoli di genere. Per far ciò ho dato uno sguardo in primo luogo alla situazione economica delle famiglie, concentrandomi sulla vulnerabilità e sui dati sull'indebitamento e il risparmio. Successivamente ho analizzato i dati sul lavoro sia individuali che all'interno della famiglia. Ho poi descritto come sia la mancanza di reddito sia il calo dell'occupazione avrebbero potuto portare ad un ridefinizione o meno dei ruoli di genere e ho esposto due prospettive teoriche, una di matrice più culturalista (in cui ritroviamo i concetti di doing gender di West e Zimmerman e di gender display di Goffman) e l'altra di stampo più economico (più improntata verso la scelta razionale e di cui fanno parte le teorie sulla disponibilità del tempo e sulle risorse relative), per capire in base a cosa possono venire suddivisi il lavoro domestico e il lavoro retribuito. Ho fatto poi riferimento ad alcuni dati dell'ISTAT per vedere quanto effettivamente stia cambiando il coinvolgimento dei padri e della madri nel lavoro familiare. Insieme a questo ho analizzato anche le politiche del welfare che hanno come obiettivo una maggiore uguaglianza di genere, sia a livello europeo che a livello nazionale. Infine ho analizzato alcune interviste per capire se e come la crisi, insieme all'evento della prima genitorialità, abbia incentivato una ridefinizione dei ruoli di genere, guardando come ha inciso sulla situazione lavorativa degli intervistati, sulla loro prospettiva di carriera, sull'organizzazione delle strategie di conciliazione e l'impatto che ha avuto su queste decisioni.
