Il romanzo olivettiano: Esplorazione di una categoria critica e dei suoi protagonisti

The aim of this research is to understand and analyse a particular type of novel, the so-called ¿romanzo olivettiano¿, based on the experience that some of the most important writers and artists in Italy had during the Fifties in the factory founded in Ivrea by the technological innovator Adriano Olivetti. The research begins with an introduction to the ideas of Adriano Olivetti, the president of this company, who was deeply concerned with socio-cultural and economic problems in Ivrea, in the South of Italy and in the other places where the company was based. One of the main aims of Olivetti was to create a company not just in order to accumulate profit, but also in order to promote the well-being and cultural advancement of employees and workers. Many intellectuals played a crucial role in the company and their commitment is visible in their novels, where they describe the labour conditions in the company and the workers' lives. The problem they emphasize is the discrepancy between the ideology of Olivetti and the description of the problems of labour in the production line. In Olivetti's original idea, the company was a community, a family, in which each one played an important role; on the contrary, in the novels the workers do not consider themselves as a family and they work just to have profit and to sustain their families. The research aims at analysing the novels in order to understand the reason of this discrepancy: in some cases, the reason can be the writers' desire to criticize the factory's ideology and to detach themselves from it, while, in other cases, it is a way to highlight the negative aspects in this situation and to find a solution.

Lo scopo della ricerca è di capire e analizzare un particolare tipo di romanzo, il "romanzo olivettiano", basato sull'esperienza che alcuni dei più eminenti intellettuali italiani ebbero durante gli anni Cinquanta nella fabbrica fondata a Ivrea dall'imprenditore Adriano Olivetti. La ricerca inizia con un'introduzione alle idea di Adriano Olivetti, il presidente dell'azienda, il quale era profondamente coinvolto in problemi socio-culturali ed economici a Ivrea, nel Sud Italia e negli altri luoghi in cui venne situata la fabbrica. Uno degli obiettivi di Olivetti era creare un'azienda non solo per avere un mero profitto, ma soprattutto per promuovere il benessere e lo sviluppo culturale di impiegati e dipendenti. Molti intellettuali ebbero un ruolo cruciale nell'azienda e il loro impegno è visibile nelle loro opere, dove descrivono le condizioni di lavoro nella fabbrica e le vite dei dipendenti. Il problema che viene enfatizzato è la discrepanza tra la filosofia di Olivetti e la descrizioni dei problemi causati dal lavoro alla catena di montaggio. Nell'idea di Olivetti, l'azienda era una comunità, una famiglia, in cui ognuno aveva un ruolo importante; al contrario, nei romanzi i dipendenti non si considerano parte dell'azienda e lavorano solo per ricevere il salario e sostenere le loro famiglie. Lo scopo della ricerca è analizzare i romanzi per capire le ragioni di questa discrepanza: il alcuni casi, la ragione è la volontà dello scrittore di criticare la filosofia dell'azienda e distaccarsene, in altri casi è un modo di evidenziare gli aspetti negativi e trovarne una soluzione.
