Granada nel medioevo. Un viaggio nel tempo fra le vie della capitale dell'ultimo sultanato di Spagna

The thesis focuses on the urban development of the Spanish city of Granada in the Middle Ages. The first chapter summarizes the characteristics that a Muslim city had to have at the time and the second one paints the Spanish diachronic picture of the centuries that will be analysed in the following chapters, which means from the 4th century AD to the 16th century. The following six chapters focus each on a precise period that the city goes through: the third talks about the late antiquity times and the first centuries of the Islamic dominion of the Umayyad state of Córdoba, the fourth focuses on the sultanate of the Zirid dynasty (the first government after the independence from Damascus) and the various phases of the first true urban expansion. The fifth chapter talks about the govern of the Almoravid dynasty and of how they focused on building improvements for the defences, while the sixth is about the Almohad Caliphate, both periods are not characterized by any significant urban expansions. The seventh delves into the times of the last Sultanate of Granada, under the Nasrid dynasty, when the city reached its maximum splendour. In the end, the last chapter focuses on the first decades after the recapture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs and the changes produced on the urban weave by them with the intent of Hispanicise and Christianise both the city and the population that lived in it.

La tesi si concentra sullo sviluppo urbano della città spagnola di Granada nel medioevo. Il primo capitolo riassume le caratteristiche che doveva avere una città musulmana dell’epoca e il secondo dipinge il quadro diacronico spagnolo dei secoli che verranno analizzati nei capitoli successivi, ossia dal IV secolo d.C. fino al XVI secolo. I successivi sei capitoli si concentrano ciascuno su un’epoca precisa che attraversa la città: il terzo parla dell’epoca tardoantica e dei primi secoli della dominazione musulmana del califfato di Cordova, il quarto si sofferma sull’epoca del sultanato della dinastia ziride (primo governo che indipendente da Damasco) e le varie fasi della prima vera e propria espansione urbana. Il quinto capitolo parla del governo degli almoravidi e di come si soffermarono su miglioramenti di tipo difensivo, mentre il sesto di quello degli almohadi, entrambe le epoche non sono caratterizzati da significative espansioni urbane. Il settimo approfondisce gli sviluppi urbani durante il periodo dell’ultimo sultanato di Granada, sotto la dinastia nasride, quando la cittadina raggiunge il suo massimo splendore e fasto. Infine, l’ultimo capitolo si sofferma sui primi decenni dopo la riconquista della città da parte dei Re cattolici e sulle modifiche apportate alla trama urbana da parte dei regnanti con l’intento di castiglianizzare e cristianizzare sia la città che la popolazione che la viveva.
