IL FASCINO DEI CAFFÈ LETTERARI: TORINO E PARIGI TRA STORIA, ARTE E TURISMO LETTERARIO

In this thesis, I undertook an in-depth and critical analysis of the importance of literary and historical cafés in both the Italian and French contexts, with a particular focus on the cities of Turin and Paris. The aim was to examine how these cafés represented the fulcrum of cultural revolutions, incubators of ideas and actions, and training and meeting places for numerous artists. In these often modest but extraordinarily influential cafés, history was shaped, particularly through the emergence of the artistic avant-garde. I examined both the elite cafés, characterised by luxurious interiors and frequented by illustrious figures, and the bohemian cafés, less refined but dense with creative fervour. In the first chapter, I explored the genesis of these cafés, their origins and socio-cultural impact. I analysed how they promoted dialogue and intellectual freedom, becoming key places for the dissemination of the press and Enlightenment thought. The second chapter is dedicated to Italy, with an itinerary from the capital, Rome, to Naples, the home of coffee. I have analysed the personalities who frequented these places and the traditions that still define Italy and its coffee. I focused on Turin, a city that can be considered the home of historic cafés, with an immense heritage and a fascinating history narrated through these establishments. In the third chapter, I moved the analysis to France, starting from the history of cafés in Bordeaux to Arles, a town that has inspired many painters for its light. I delved into the city of Paris, rich in history, art and literature, which has attracted artists from all over Europe. Parisian cafés, especially in the Montmartre district, have been epicentres of intellectual innovation. In the last chapter, I examined the phenomenon of Literary Tourism, which enhances historical and literary cafés, libraries, house museums and other cultural institutions. This type of tourism offers an immersion in history and art that is often overlooked. I discussed initiatives to enhance and safeguard these places, emphasising the importance of tourism that allows one to experience works of art and historical places in an immersive way. However, I also highlighted the risk of over-modernisation, as in the case of coworking facilities, which, although similar to traditional cafés, do not always encourage the exchange and dissemination of ideas as they once did. In conclusion, this thesis shows how literary and historical cafés have been and can continue to be crucial places for culture and creativity, offering food for thought on how to enhance and preserve these spaces in contemporary society.

In questa tesi, ho intrapreso un'analisi approfondita e critica sull'importanza dei caffè letterari e storici, sia nel contesto italiano che francese, con un focus particolare sulle città di Torino e Parigi. L'intento è stato quello di esaminare come questi caffè abbiano rappresentato il fulcro di rivoluzioni culturali, incubatori di idee e azioni, e luoghi di formazione e incontro per numerosi artisti. In questi caffè, spesso modesti ma straordinariamente influenti, si è plasmata la storia, in particolare attraverso l'emergere delle avanguardie artistiche. Ho esaminato sia i caffè di élite, caratterizzati da interni lussuosi e frequentati da figure illustri, sia i caffè bohemien, meno raffinati ma densi di fervore creativo. Nel primo capitolo, ho esplorato la genesi di questi caffè, le loro origini e il loro impatto socio-culturale. Ho analizzato come abbiano promosso il dialogo e la libertà intellettuale, divenendo luoghi chiave per la diffusione della stampa e del pensiero illuminista. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato all'Italia, con un itinerario che parte dalla capitale, Roma, fino a Napoli, patria del caffè. Ho analizzato le personalità che hanno frequentato questi luoghi e le tradizioni che ancora oggi definiscono l'Italia e il suo caffè. Ho focalizzato l'attenzione su Torino, città che può essere considerata la patria dei caffè storici, con un patrimonio immenso e una storia affascinante narrata attraverso questi locali. Nel terzo capitolo, ho spostato l'analisi in Francia, partendo dalla storia dei caffè a Bordeaux fino ad Arles, cittadina che ha ispirato molti pittori per la sua luce. Ho approfondito la città di Parigi, ricca di storia, arte e letteratura, che ha attratto artisti da tutta Europa. I caffè parigini, specialmente nel quartiere di Montmartre, sono stati epicentri di innovazione intellettuale. Nell'ultimo capitolo, ho esaminato il fenomeno del Turismo Letterario, che valorizza caffè storici e letterari, biblioteche, case museo e altre istituzioni culturali. Questo tipo di turismo offre un'immersione nella storia e nell'arte, spesso trascurata. Ho discusso le iniziative di valorizzazione e salvaguardia di questi luoghi, sottolineando l'importanza di un turismo che permette di vivere le opere d'arte e i luoghi storici in modo immersivo. Tuttavia, ho anche evidenziato il rischio di una modernizzazione eccessiva, come nel caso dei coworking, che, sebbene simili ai caffè tradizionali, non sempre favoriscono lo scambio e la diffusione di idee come un tempo. In conclusione, questa tesi dimostra come i caffè letterari e storici siano stati e possano continuare a essere luoghi cruciali per la cultura e la creatività, offrendo uno spunto di riflessione su come valorizzare e preservare questi spazi nella società contemporanea.
