Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ritratto dell’atleta, attore e politico e la sua influenza nell’immaginario maschile nei film d’azione tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta.

The purpose of the thesis is to analyze and problematize the figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the triple role of athlete, actor and politician, outlining his influence on a sporting, aesthetic, gender and media level. The first chapter will examine the role as protagonist, pioneer and guru that Schwarzenegger has assumed as athlete in the world of bodybuilding, trying to emphasize how he was a key figure capable of popularizing this discipline for his sporting merits, entrepreneurial and informative skills. The years spent as a pro bodybuilder are important because, as from now on, the Austrian Oak will be able to build and establish the image, the physique and the charisma of the celebrity he later became. The second chapter will focus on Schwarzenegger’s actor career instead. First, the historical and evolutionary context of the action genre will be outlined. Subsequently, a comparison will be made between Schwarzenegger and the main other actors of trend, emphasizing the mutual aestethic, physical differences and respective models of virility. Finally, starting from Italian silent cinema with Maciste’s films, then dealing with American peplums of the fifties and sixties, reaching the eighties and nineties, the evolutionary path of image faced by Schwarzenegger will be explored. This will be followed by an analysis of the filmography aimed to point out how the physicality and the actor’s performance have changed over the time and based on the specifications of each film, considering the expressive needs of sub-genre of action.The third chapter will explore the relationship between Schwarzenegger’s political career as Governor of California, the sometimes controversial ideas that have made him the most democratic of the Republicans and the All- American relationship between actoriality and politics.

Il proposito della tesi è di analizzare e problematizzare la figura di Arnold Schwarzenegger nella triplice veste di atleta, attore e politico delineandone l’influenza a livello sportivo, estetico, di genere e mediatico.Il primo capitolo si concentrerà sul ruolo di protagonista, pioniere e infine guru che Schwarzenegger ha assunto come atleta nel mondo del bodybuilding, cercando di evidenziare come egli sia stato il personaggio chiave capace di rendere popolare questa disciplina sia per meriti sportivi, sia per capacità imprenditoriali e divulgative. Gli anni trascorsi come atleta agonista assumono importanza anche in un’ottica generale, poiché proprio in questo periodo la Quercia Austriaca avrà modo di costruire e solidificare l’immagine, il fisico ed il carisma della celebrità poi divenuta. Il secondo capitolo invece sarà incentrato sulla carriera cinematografica dell’attore. In primo luogo verrà delineato il contesto storico ed evolutivo del genere action. In seguito si procederà ad un confronto tra Schwarzenegger e i principali attori del filone evidenziando le reciproche differenze estetiche, fisiche e i rispettivi modelli di virilità assunti. Infine, partendo dal cinema muto italiano con i film di Maciste, per poi trattare i peplum americani degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta giungendo infine al ventennio Ottanta e Novanta, verrà approfondito il percorso evolutivo d’immagine affrontato da Schwarzenegger nel corso del tempo. Seguirà in un’analisi della filmografia mirata a evidenziare come la fisicità e la performance attoriale siano mutate ed evolute nel corso del tempo e in base alle specifiche delle singole pellicole, tenendo conto anche delle esigenze espressive di ogni sottogenere dell’action. Il terzo capitolo approfondirà invece il rapporto la carriera politica di Schwarzenegger come governatore della California, le idee talvolta controverse che lo hanno reso il più democratico tra i repubblicani e il rapporto, tutto americano, tra attorialità e impegno politico.
