This research presents a systematic review of the geographical distribution of inventive capabilities and technological diversification in the developing region of Latin America and elaborates an empirical analysis to discuss whether inventive capacity matters for environmental performance? Through the use of "green" patents, plus a Complexity index, the leading countries and main domains are identified, to discuss if the level of technological diversification is, if at all, related to the direction of the environmental tendency -regarding emissions and wastewater treatment-. The findings suggest that green patenting is a strong predictor of CO2 emissions, better than the Complexity index, being robust when controlling for GDP or HDI, among other control variables.
