Il grillz in Musica. Analisi di quarant'anni di TOP 100

The aim of my thesis is to analyze the use of grillz in the urban music scene. The study starts by questioning the concept of “genere”, which is the Italian for both “gender” and “genre”, and how both are similar and connected. Secondly, urban music, aesthetic and culture are identified, and a brief summary of the genre’s early history is presented. The core of the analysis is based on the review of over 40 years of Top-Charts songs. For every song the lyrics, the album cover and the music video are being examined. This is because the narration of the mouth accessory by the subjects who wear it is useful to catch some interesting clues to comprehend its use tout court. Grillz are also semiotically studied as a form of masking. Finally, with the help of theories on otherness, defacing and cultural identity, the new visage created by the grillz is questioned, in order to understand the causes of the phenomenon, its cultural and political roots, and its possible and plausible evolution of the grillz as a symbol of ransom and empowerment.

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di analizzare l’uso del grillz nell’ambiente della musica urbana. Lo studio inizia ponendo la questione del termine “genere” e le correlazioni che comporta tra il suo significato identitario e quello musicale. Quindi, viene presentato il concetto di genere urbano, analizzandone estetica e cultura di riferimento. Il centro dell’analisi si basa sulla revisione di più di 40 anni di brani selezionati tra Top Charts mondiali. Per ogni canzone vengono analizzati i lyrics, la copertina dell’album ed il videoclip musicale. Viene utilizzata la narrazione fatta dai soggetti coinvolti, così da comprendere più a fondo l’uso di tale accessorio boccale. Il grillz, inoltre, viene studiato semioticamente in quanto maschera. Infine, verranno utilizzate diverse teorie a proposito di identità culturale, defacing e otherness per studiare il nuovo volto che il grillz crea, in modo da comprendere le cause di questo fenomeno, le sue radici culturali e politiche, e la possibile evoluzione dello stesso come simbolo di rivincita ed emancipazione.
