This paper analyses how Italian merchants and bankers influenced the social, political and cultural landscape of Northern Europe between the 14th and 15th centuries. The reputation of these merchants is often negatively affected by activities such as smuggling and usury. The aim of the study is not to distort this view, but rather to enrich it with positive aspects. Indeed, these individuals were great patrons of works of art. The hope would be to carry out artistic investigations that go hand in hand with history, through a study of the material culture of an area and the families of patrons of works with the aim of creating a new awareness in those who approach the subject.

In questo elaborato viene analizzato come mercanti e banchieri italiani abbiano condizionato il panorama sociale, politico e culturale del Nord Europa tra XIV e XV secolo. La reputazione di questi mercanti è spesso influenzata negativamente da attività quali il contrabbando e l'usura. Lo scopo dello studio non è quello di stravolgere tale visione, ma piuttosto di arricchirla anche con aspetti positivi. Infatti, questi individui furono grandi committenti di opere d'arte. L'auspicio sarebbe quello di effettuare indagini artistiche che vadano di pari passo con la storia, attraverso uno studio della cultura materiale di un’area e delle famiglie di committenti di opere con il fine di creare una nuova consapevolezza in coloro che si approcciano alla tematica.
