The aim of the thesis is to describe the role that women played during the Cuban Revolution, they had a greater position in the Revolution: participated in different operations, and also accomplished very important tasks for the survival and final victory of the rebel army. Women’s participation in struggles has brought a change in society since 1959, involving women in education, work, and social life. Very important was the creation of the Federation of Cuban Women, which was at the forefront of the involvement of women within society. In the first chapter, different spheres of Cuban society before the Revolution are analyzed and they concern the role of women and their participation, from education to social struggles to achieve female emancipation. The second chapter, analyses women’s role in the struggle against the dictatorship through a historical overview that goes from the Batista’s coup to the attack at the Moncada barracks, and subsequently the analysis focuses on the role of women in the llano (city) and then on the role they played in the Sierra (mountains) with the creation of the women’s platoon Marianas Grajales. The third chapter shows women’s role after the winning of the Revolution, how women participated in the construction of the new society, and the results that they have achieved. In the final part, the conclusions of the thesis are drawn and some suggestions are provided for future research.
