La donna è mobile... Studio dei Personaggi Femminili tra Tradizione e Modernità in Machado de Assis.

The study addresses the issue of gender in 19th century Brazilian society through the analysis of the representation of female characters in the works of Machado de Assis, with particular attention to the novels Dom Casmurro, Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas and Quincas Borba. The main objective is to examine how Machado de Assis’ female characters reflect and subvert the gender norms of the time. Through a comparative analysis, the work explores the roles, relationships and emotions of characters such as Capitu (Dom Casmurro), Virgilia (Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas) and Sofia (Quincas Borba) and highlights how these characters reveal a psychological and behavioural complexity that goes against the gender stereotypes commonly associated with women in the 19th century. Machado de Assis, although embedded in the literary tradition of his time, highlights through these characters the tension between different female identities and the expectations of patriarchal society, and thus stands out in the historical-cultural context in which he wrote – a context in which female figures tends to be relegated to secondary or decorative roles – and in so doing, enhances an innovative tendency of the author that has been overlooked in Machado’s bibliography.

L’elaborato affronta la questione di genere nella società brasiliana del XIX secolo attraverso l’analisi deila rappresentazione dei personaggi femminili nelle opere di Machado de Assis, con particolare attenzione ai romanzi Dom Casmurro, Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas e Quincas Borba. L’obiettivo principale è esaminare come i personaggi femminili di Machado de Assis riflettano e sovvertano le norme di genere dell’epoca. Attraverso un’analisi comparativa, l’elaborato esplora i ruoli, le relazioni ed emozioni di personaggi come Capitu (Dom Casmurro), Virgilia (Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas) e Sofia (Quincas Borba) ed evidenzia come questi personaggi rivelino una complessità psicologica e comportamentale che contraria gli stereotipi di genere comunemente associati alle donne dell’Ottocento Machado de Assis, pur inserito nella tradizione letteraria del suo tempo, attraverso questi personaggi mette in luce le tensioni tra diverse identità femminili e le aspettative della società patriarcale e perciò si distingue nel contesto storico-culturale in cui scriveva – un contesto in cui figure femminili tendono ad essere rilegate a ruoli secondari o decorativi – ed in tal modo, valorizza una tendenza innovativa dell’autore che è stata trascurata dalla bibliografia machadiana.
