Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme and falsified financial statements

The primary ojective of this thesis is the analysis of the structure and characteristics of the Ponzi scheme and, in particular, of the version of the scheme that was used by Bernard Madoff. In the first part I am focusing on describing the main elements of the Ponzi scheme including all the methods of operation, the legal ramifications and the various financial aspects. In the second part of the study, I am focusing on the scheme designed, implemented and finalised by Bernard Madoff. Therefore, I will be analysing the key features of his scheme, the investigation carried out towards him and the role of Madoff and his accomplices during the time of the 2008 crisis. The technique he used to falsify financial statements is discussed along with a detailed analysis of how Madoff falsified investment returns, the specific techniques he used, and the structure and components of his financial statements. Key financial ratios are examined to highlight anomalies, and discrepancies in financial statements are explained in depth. The conclusion summarizes the key findings of the research, discusses the broader impact of Madoff's scheme on the financial world, and offers final thoughts on the implications of this unprecedented fraud. Through this comprehensive review, the paper aims to provide insights into the mechanics of financial fraud and the critical importance of regulatory oversight in the financial sector.

L'obiettivo principale di questa tesi è l'analisi della struttura e delle caratteristiche dello schema Ponzi e, in particolare, della versione dello schema che è stata utilizzata da Bernard Madoff. La prima parte contiene la descrizione degli elementi principali dello schema Ponzi, compresi tutti i metodi di funzionamento, le ramificazioni legali e i vari aspetti finanziari. Nella seconda parte dello studio, è invece descritto lo schema progettato, implementato e finalizzato da Bernard Madoff. Segue poi la descrizione delle caratteristiche chiave del suo piano, l'indagine condotta nei suoi confronti e il ruolo di Madoff e dei suoi complici durante il periodo della crisi del 2008. La tecnica che ha utilizzato per falsificare i bilanci è discussa insieme ad un'analisi dettagliata di come Madoff ha falsificato i rendimenti degli investimenti, le tecniche specifiche che ha utilizzato e la struttura ed i componenti dei suoi bilanci. I principali indici finanziari sono esaminati per evidenziare le anomalie e vengono spiegate in modo approfondito le discrepanze nei rendiconti finanziari.
