This essay provides in depth market analysis, information and insights into the European insurance market. In the first chapter I give an overview of the European insurance market, by analyzing the situation in an after crisis environment. The first paragraph gives a detailed description of the European insurance market based on the main products offered by the insurance companies, of the main players in the market and of the different distribution channels used by the insurers. The second paragraph analysis the UK market, being the third largest insurance market in the world and the largest in Europe. I focused on its importance in the UK economy and how it becames the most important insurance market in Europe. In the second chapter I describe the Italian insurance market. The direct impact of the crisis on insurance was relatively limited as compared to other sectors of Italian economy. The aim is to give a general framework of the insurance industry in terms of importance on the production system of the Italian economy and its size. First I analyze the top five leading groups in terms of overall premium income. In particular I focus on the Life sector which the last year experienced a strong growth due to the increase in the confidence of investors favored by the more stable financial outlook and low returns on fixed income instruments. Then I focus on the demand for insurance based on data provided by Italian Insurance Trade Association (ANIA). In particular, as margins deteriorate for traditional savings products, protection products such as term life insurance, disability insurance and annuities are becoming more attractive to consumers because they provide new source of income , generate steady margins and diversify risks. In the last paragraph I offer a picture of Italian insurance market within the European context. In the third chapter I focus on AVIVA Italy Holding Spa as a case study. This last chapter investigate the role of this international company in the Italian insurance industry.
