This project is intended as a prevention program against the development of any depressive disorders in prisons. Life conditions are very difficult because of overcrowding, lack of dignity and, more importantly, because of daily inactivity, so prisoners may risk developing depressive symptoms and Italy risks European fines. For its application, we have created a screening test to intercept the depressive symptoms which can occur in the prison population. The sample analysis in the Prison of Quarto Inferiore, Asti, showed very little manifestation of symptoms, but were not able to obtain results on the effectiveness of rehabilitative interventions recommended to prevent and treat the disorder, due to lack of time and the ambitious nature of the project, in fact, it was assumed that to combat depression in prison the entire Italian prison system should be reformed. This transformation should aim at creating new opportunities for their training and work, which would allow the prisoners to acquire skills to exploit for their social reintegration, once free, but also the adaptation of services to alternative measures. The ¿Uffici esecuzione penale sterna¿ (UEPE) may be useful to prevent the institutionalization of those people who end up in prison for a short time and for petty crimes, helping to save their poor living conditions and especially the risk of occurrence of depressive symptoms. In conclusion, in order to fight the symptoms of depression in prison revolutionizing the Italian penitentiary system would be the only alternative.
