¿Serotonin and Bipolar Disorder¿ is a bibliography study divided into three chapters. In the first serotonin (5-HT) are considered in a molecular biological level. It is examined serotonin biosynthesis and its receptors, that are present in human but also in very simple nervous systems. They are classified in seven classes (5-HT1 to 5-HT7) and are G-protein cupled, except for 5-HT3. The second one is about Raphe Nuclei and the neuroanatomy of serotonergic system. The soma of serotonin neurons are in the Raphe Nuclei, in the brainstem, along the mildline of the reticular formation. Raphe Nuclei are divided in two groups, rostral and caudal, separated and with different projections. The third chapter concerns the bipolar disorder and the connection with the serotonergic system, but also with dopaminergic (DA) and noradrenergic (NE) system. There are much evidence between the dysfunctional coaction of 5-HT, DA and NE and the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder.
