The aim of my thesis is to address the role of business interpreters as discussed in the literature by Translation scholars and as self-presented online by professionals. In the first part, after a brief overview of interpreting modes and settings, we deal with the role of business interpreters, in particular highlighting the transition from being a mere object for the translation to being the coordinator of the interaction supervising turn-taking, dealing with different cultures, with different negotiation attitudes and practices, thus solving intercultural problems. In the second part we illustrate a case study on two of the most important professional interpreters' associations in Italy, i.e. AITI and Assointerpreti. These are taken into account to examine how their members (specifically the interpreters from the Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta regions) inform potential clients about their roles and services through online (web-based) communication. The objective of the present work is to discuss the role of interpreters, with particular reference to business settings. The analysis is carried out on two levels, both theoretical and practical, and we reach the conclusion that the contents displayed online by the two associations and some of their members are consistent with the theoretical precepts that have been presented in the first part of the report. However, they also show that the business reality is oriented to operate more pragmatically and towards a more commercial and negotiating goal.
