Tradurre per il doppiaggio Brick Lane

This thesis is an Italian translation for dubbing of the first four scenes of "Brick Lane",a 2007 British film directed by Sarah Gavron which is not available in the Italian version yet. "Brick Lane" has turned out to be an ideal testing ground: set in multicultural Britain, it deals with cultural differences and social problems. Many characters have a strong foreign accent in the original English version, there are cultural references, shifts in register and code-switching from English into Bengali and Arabic. The four scenes are presented separately and several points for the study of each were made, so that it was easier to organise the work and make a more exhaustive analysis. Consequently, this thesis is organised into four chapters, one for each scene. Every chapter is divided into two parts: the first one presents the script of the selected scene in the source language and the translated version I made as parallel texts. In the second part an analysis of the vocabulary, grammar and text of the SL is provided, along with a commentary on the translation choices.The main focus is on the most challenging and interesting aspects of this work: the technical constraints translation for dubbing is subject to ¿i.e. various types of synchronization- and the linguistic issues and problems encountered while translating. As the film presents a wide context of intercultural dynamics, code-switching, code-mixing and cultural references in particular required special attention and a lot of research. Since, in my opinion, multilingualism is the most relevant feature of Brick Lane, as it is the expression of the multicultural reality which is the engine of the whole story, I decided to reserve some space to it at the beginning. A brief note on the way of transcribing film dialogue is also provided.

Questo lavoro è una traduzione per il doppiaggio delle prime quattro scene di "Brick Lane", un film del 2007 diretto da Sarah Gavron e non ancora disponibile nella versione italiana. Ambientato in un'Inghilterra multiculturale e articolato tra differenze culturali e problemi sociali, "Brick Lane" è stato un campo di prova ideale: molti personaggi hanno un forte accento straniero nella versione originale inglese, sono presenti riferimenti culturali, cambiamento di registro e di lingua, dall'Inglese al Bengalese e all'Arabo. Le quattro scene sono presentate separatamente e lo studio di ognuna di esse è articolato in punti fondamentali. La tesi è pertanto organizzata in quattro capitoli (uno per ogni scena) a loro volta divisi in due sezioni: nella prima il testo originale e la traduzione sono presentati come testi in parallelo; nella seconda vengono invece presentati un'analisi del testo di partenza (registro, grammatica... ) e un commento sulle scelte di traduzione. Particolare attenzione è riservata agli aspetti più stimolanti di questo lavoro: i vari vincoli a cui questo tipo di traduzione è soggetta -es. i diversi tipi di sincrono-, le particolarità linguistiche e i problemi che esse pongono nella traduzione. Dal momento che le dinamiche interculturali in questo film sono molteplici, cambiamenti di lingua (code-switching) e riferimenti culturali sono particolarmente degni di nota. Dal momento che, inoltre, il multilinguismo è uno degli aspetti più peculiari di "Brick Lane", essendo espressione della realtà multiculturale motore dell'intera vicenda, ho deciso di riservargli dello spazio all'inizio del lavoro. E' stata fornita anche una breve nota sulle convenzione per la trascrizione del dialogo cinematografico.
