The aim of this piece of research is to analyze the figures of Lady Diana and Jackie Kennedy as celebrity and political personae in Larraín’s unconventional cinematic production, focusing on the original angle he decides to use. It is paramount to study the terminology used in celebrity discourse, including its contamination with politics, because of the political position of the two protagonists; moreover, this discourse is also intertwined with trauma studies due to the mental pathologies the women suffered from. On the other hand, in order to better understand these two personages and examine their cinematic representation, their biographies and fairy tales have been taken into account. As far as their cinematic representation is concerned, tv series, such as The Crown (2021) and The Kennedys (2011), were also added to set the basis for comparison on a documentary level. This dissertation is divided into three main chapters: the first chapter examines the framework within which this study is set, namely that of celebrity discourse, which is useful to determine the vocabulary concerning the celebrity persona, in connection with politics and mental health; the second chapter focuses on the figures of Lady Diana and Jackie Kennedy per se, exploring their stories and identities; the third and final chapter, based on both Spencer and Jackie, aims at investigating Larraín’s representation of the Princess of Wales and the First Lady.
