Abstract

Terrorism has always been considered a threat for the American people but the struggle against it, became a priority on the agenda of the government after the 9/11 attack. After the 9/11 attack, the government became definitively aware of the dangers that may arise from terrorism and the negative reflections that it may have in society. This was the reason why the then president, George W. Bush decided to start the Global War on Terror through which to identify and to condemn the perpetrators of the tragedy. His intention was followed by a specific decision since he made it possible to open of the Guantanamo Detention Camp, to ensure safety and protection of US citizens. Terrorism is very often considered as a phenomenon that has implications only in the economic, social, political and cultural fields. The tendency is that of ignoring it from a linguistic point of view. The decision to write a dissertation on purpose in this regard is precisely that of understanding how experts of communication have dealt with the issue and how they have decided to represent it to the audience according to the interests they serve to protect. To lighten and to give a direction to the research, a corpus analysis software will be engaged and specific press conferences will be uploaded on it. It is crucial to carry out a comparative analysis under the linguistic lens, of specific choices and discursive strategies of Bush's and Obama's administration on terrorism. The presence of two specific corpora and the related information through the core chapters of the research, is an interesting contribution but challenging at the same time as it will underline the evolution in terms of terrorism after the 9/11 attack, of those linguistic features that have affected the Bush's administration and Obama's one. The contribution of the software will give a significant scientific footprint to the work by bringing out the differences that exist between these power factions and the related ideologies of belonging
