Regine, mercanti, combattenti: le donne africane e la loro storia rimossa

The thesis aims to shed more light on the importance of the role of women in the African context, exploring the stories of some of the figures who contributed to the growth and prosperity of the areas in which they lived. The first chapter introduces the reader to the complexities of the African continent, with its societies and communities, providing some of the analytical tools needed to approach a reality as complex as it is articulated, far from that often narrated in a Eurocentric perspective. This section is then followed by an analysis of the types of sources used and the method to decode them, without neglecting a history of the continent that crosses its natural environment as well as its cultural, ethnic and social roots. The final part - which includes the concept of the study and the role of witchcraft - focuses on the spiritual and religious framework, placing the various African realities at the center and as the cradle of both indigenous religions and of the most known monotheistic religions. In the second chapter, the role of women in different African societies is explored. It is further developed through the introduction of the personal stories of a series of eminent figures, divided according to the regions of influence and their role within society. It is also observed in detail the historical contribution of many women in the colonial period, without neglecting some of the dynamics related to the post-colonial period. The third and final chapter traces and discusses the path of decolonization, in some ways still ongoing, trying to prefer an African and feminist line to the historiographical path undertaken. Particular attention is paid to the role that today people and African-descendant communities have in terms of continuity and inspiration between past and present.

La tesi ambisce a fare maggiore luce sull'importanza del ruolo delle donne nel contesto africano, esplorando le storie di alcune figure che hanno contribuito alla crescita e alla prosperità delle aree in cui sono vissute. Il primo capitolo introduce il lettore alle complessità del continente africano, con le sue società e comunità, fornendo alcuni degli strumenti analitici necessari per avvicinarsi a una realtà tanto complessa quanto articolata, lontana da quella sovente narrata in una prospettiva eurocentrica. Vengono poi analizzate le tipologie di fonti utilizzate e il metodo per decodificarle, senza tralasciare una storia del continente che attraversi il suo ambiente naturale così come le sue radici culturali, etniche e sociali. La parte finale – che include lo studio concetto e il ruolo della stregoneria – si sofferma sul quadro spirituale e religioso, ponendo le varie realtà africane al centro e come culla sia delle religioni indigene, sia delle più conosciute religioni monoteiste. Nel secondo capitolo, viene esplorato il ruolo delle donne nelle diverse società africane, andando poi a sviluppare e raccontare la storia di una serie di figure eminenti, suddivise a seconda delle regioni di influenza e del loro ruolo all’interno della società. Viene altresì osservato nel dettaglio l’apporto storico di numerose donne nel periodo coloniale, senza tuttavia tralasciare alcune dinamiche legate al periodo post-coloniale. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo traccia e discute il percorso della decolonizzazione, per alcuni versi ancora in corso, cercando di prediligere una linea africana e femminista al percorso storiografico intrapreso. Viene posta particolare attenzione al ruolo che oggi hanno le persone e le comunità afro-discendenti in termini di continuità e ispirazione tra passato e presente.
