Joseph-Auguste Duc, tra la chiesa Aostana e la dinastia sabauda

This thesis aims to understand and analyze the personality and ideals of Joseph-Auguste Duc, Bishop of Aosta (1835–1922). The starting point was the first two volumes of the nine that make up the Histoire de l’Église d’Aoste, written by the Bishop, which retraces the history of the Aosta Valley diocese from its origins to the 19th century, as well as the motivations and usefulness behind the creation of a history of the diocese. The thesis seeks to identify the reasons that led to the creation of the book series while Monsignor Duc was engaged in managing the delicate balance of relations with the Church of Rome and the royal state, and how the bishop, thanks to his skill and above all his strong personality, managed to handle the situation while maintaining his ideals over time.

In questa tesi si cerca di comprendere ed analizzare la personalità e gli ideali del vescovo di Aosta Joseph-Auguste Duc (1835 - 1922). La base di partenza sono stati i primi due volumi dei nove componenti l’Histoire de l’Église d’Aoste scritta dal Vescovo, dove si ripercorre la storia della diocesi valdostana dalle origini al XIX secolo, le motivazioni e l’utilità che hanno portato alla creazione di una storia della diocesi. Si cercano di individuare le motivazioni che hanno portato alla creazione di una storia della diocesi mentre Monsignor Duc era impegnato a gestire il delicato equilibrio dei rapporti con la Chiesa di Roma e con lo Stato regio e di come il vescovo, grazie alla sua abilità e soprattutto alla sua forte personalità, riuscì a gestire la situazione mantenendo fissi nel tempo i suoi ideali.
