Qui Ci Sono Draghi, uno Studio sull'Umorismo nella Traduzione Italiana del romanzo "Guards! Guards!" di Terry Pratchett

This thesis investigates humour translation in the Italian version of Terry Pratchett's comic fantasy novel Guards! Guards! (1989). As a topic that has garnered some interest in the field of translation studies in the last few years, this work aims at expanding on the subject by proposing an analysis of some tendencies in a restricted number of both structural and linguistic elements of humour. Namely, parody, wordplay and linguistic variation. The analysis is based on the comparison between humorous selected scenes in the original English text and in their Italian translation published in 2005 by TEA under the title A me le guardie!. The structure of this work is, thus: an introduction detailing the aims and main sources of this thesis, two chapters dedicated, respectively, to the author and the material analysed and to the theorethical framework which this study is based on, two chapters dedicated to the analysis of both the source text and the translated text and, lastly, the conclusions I reached. What emerges from this study is that, while there are no infallible, predeterminate solutions to specific problems in humour translation, the strategies detailed are a useful tool for the translator, who should approach them by relying on his/her insight and judgment and apply them with creativity in trying to convey both the sense and the effect of the original text. This highlights the complexity behind the endeavour of translating humour.

Lo scopo principale di questa tesi è di analizzare come sia stato reso l'elemento comico presente nel romanzo fantasy parodico Guards! Guards! (1989) di Terry Pratchett nella sua traduzione italiana. Negli ultimi anni la traduzione dell'umorismo è una tematica che ha riscosso una certa fama e interesse negli ambienti accademici, e questo lavoro si propone di approfondirne lo studio tramite l'analisi di alcune tendenze traduttive riguardanti determinati meccanismi comici presenti nel libro. Nello specifico, i fenomeni analizzati saranno sia di natura strettamente linguistica, come i giochi di parole e le varietà linguistiche, che di natura formale, come i meccanismi parodici. L'analisi verrà perciò effettuata tramite il confronto della traduzione con il testo originale a fronte di alcune scene tratte dal romanzo. Le fonti saranno la terza edizione edita da Corgi nel 2012 del testo originale e la sua traduzione a cura di Antonella Pieretti edita da TEA nel 2005 con il titolo A me le Guardie!. Il lavoro si articola in sei capitoli: un'introduzione che delinea gli obiettivi e le fonti principali di questa tesi; due capitoli introduttivi dedicati all'autore e al materiale analizzato e agli studi relativi alla traduzione e all'umorismo su cui questa tesi si è basata; due capitoli di analisi e uno di conclusioni. Ciò che emerge da questo studio è il fatto che, seppure non esistano strategie infallibili nell'affrontare specifiche problematiche traduttive, gli approcci qui illustrati sono strumenti fondamentali per ogni traduttore. Tuttavia, la loro applicazione necessita di una grande creatività e flessibilità per trasmettere efficacemente sia il senso generale del testo che il suo effetto comico, e ciò mostra chiaramente la difficoltà insita nel processo traduttivo di questo particolare aspetto.
