Strategie di accessibilità per Orange is the New Black: Audiodescrizione italiana per ciechi e ipovedenti e Sottotitoli per sordi e ipoudenti.

La tesi di ricerca si pone come obiettivo chiarire quali sia la situazione di ciechi, ipovedenti, sordi e ipoudenti in Italia, dopo un confronto con la situazione delle suddette categorie in Europa: dati quantitativi, statistiche e studi che prendono in considerazione tanto la situazione europea quanto quella italiana sono stati oggetto di analisi. Nel secondo capitolo, l'attenzione si sposta, invece, sulla definizione di strategie per favorire l'accessibilità ai prodotti audiovisivi, note come audiodescrizione e sottotitolazione per non udenti: le prospettive di esperti del campo, le linee guida esistenti per la creazione di questi servizi e un paragone fra le diverse linee guida sono stati inseriti nell'analisi. Due nascenti tecniche, audiointroduzione e audiosottotitoli, sono state inoltre prese in considerazione come potenziali campi di sviluppo della disciplina: la loro definizione e analisi si è rivelata utile anche ai fini della ricerca. Il terzo e conclusivo capitolo si propone invece come scopo la proposta di un'audiodescrizione e di sottotitoli per non udenti per il primo episodio della prima stagione della serie Orange is the New Black. La serie, provvista di audiodescrizione e sottotitoli per la versione inglese, è presente sulla piattaforma di streaming Netflix, ed è stata scelta per la presenza di particolari difficoltà a livello descrittivo: la mancanza di silenzi e pause significative, l'uso di lingue straniere, la presenza di molteplici personaggi, l'uso di suoni e musica in modo consistente e l'inserzione di scene sessualmente esplicite hanno portato alla necessità di attente riflessioni sull'impostazione sia dell'audiodescrizione sia dei sottotitoli. La versione italiana è stata sviluppata in seguito alla trascrizione dei dialoghi, dell'audiodescrizione e dei sottotitoli inglesi, oltre alla versione doppiata e sottotitolata italiana: la trascrizione finale contiene anche l'audiodescrizione italiana e i sottotitoli per non udenti. Un confronto tra l'ipotetica audiodescrizione italiana ed esistenti audiodescrizioni italiane proposte da Netflix è stato effettuato prendendo come termine di paragone il primo episodio della serie Suburra, scelto per vicinanza di tematiche e registro. Studi sulla possibilità di tradurre questi servizi da una lingua all'altra sono stati presi in considerazione: un tentativo pratico di tradurre l'audiodescrizione è stato effettuato per i primi dieci minuti dell'episodio, controllando le tempistiche per la traduzione e successivamente comparandole con le tempistiche per la creazione di un'audiodescrizione ex novo, confermando alla fine la maggior velocità della creazione e maggior libertà del descrittore. I file dell'audiodescrizione e dei sottotitoli, oltre ad essere stati trascritti con il minutaggio, sono anche disponibili in formato elettronico, per la fruizione da parte del pubblico.

The research aims at understanding the current situation of blind, visually impaired, deaf and hard of hearing people in Italy, comparing it with the situation of the above-mentioned categories in Europe: quantitative data, statistics and studies on the European and the Italian situation have been considered. The second chapter, instead, focuses on the definition of two strategies, audiodescription and subtitling for the deaf, aiming at facilitating accessibility to audiovisual products: experts' perspectives, existing guide lines on the provision of these services and a comparison between them were added in the analysis. Moreover, two recent techniques, known as audiointroduction and audiosubtitling, have been analyzed as potential developments of the field: their definition was helpful also for the purpose of the research. The third and final chapter aims, instead, the audiodescritpion and subititles for the deaf for the first episode of the first season of Orange is the New Black. The series, provided with the English audiodescription and subtitles, is available on Netflix, and it was chosen for the various difficulties from the descriptive point of view: the lack of silences and long pauses, the use of foreign languages, the presence of many characters, the significant use of sounds and music and the presence of sexually explicit scenes were the central issues considered when creating the audiodescription and the set of subtitles. The Italian version was developed after not only the English original dialogue, audiodescription and subtitles, but also the Italian dubbed and subtitled versions were transcribed: the final transcription contains also the Italian audiodescription and subtitles for the deaf. A comparison between the hypothetical Italian audiodescription and other examples provided by Netflix was carried out considering the first episode of the series Suburra, for the many similarities in themes and tone. Studies on the possibilities to translate audiodescription and subtitles from one language into another were considered: a practical attempt was carried out to verify this possibility by checking the total amount of time needed to translate or to create from scratch the audiodescription of the first ten minutes of the episode, confirming ultimately that the second option is quicker and allows more freedom to the describer. The files of the audiodescription and subtitles were transcribed with the timing and they were made available in a digital format for the audience.
