La guerra in Kosovo e le conseguenze psicologiche: il racconto del trauma tra storia e letteratura

This paper stems from an interest in delving into the Kosovo War (1998-1999) and its psychological consequences, seeking to understand how the latter are treated and represented through literature. So in this paper, after a brief historical introduction, I analyze some novels that deal with the theme of the conflict and the effects it had on the affected civilians. Through the different narratives we have the opportunity to observe human sensitivity and how individuals react to such a violent and dramatic event. Indeed, literature is a particularly effective tool for recovering the more human aspects of war and through which it is possible to give voice to the suffering of survivors, noting the ways and strategies by which people react to trauma and pain. In this research work I have compared historical, literary and scientific sources to try to bring out a broad and in-depth picture of what happened during and after the end of the conflict. Therefore, the goal of my thesis is to analyze this period not only through historical and scientific documents, but also with the help of testimonies, essays and books in which I can find the words of those who personally experienced the conflict. Unfortunately, during a war, behind every treaty, report and official act there is always the life of civilian victims, and that is why I strongly believe that it is necessary to start from their stories in order to go beyond the institutional narrative. Through this work I try to highlight how literature, intertwined with history and science, is able to make us understand not only the deepest aspects of human pain and suffering, but also the resilience and courage of those who want to live to tell the tale, in the hope of never seeing the same mistakes repeated.

Questo elaborato nasce dall’interesse di approfondire la guerra del Kosovo (1998-1999) e le sue conseguenze psicologiche, cercando di comprendere come quest’ultime siano trattate e rappresentate attraverso la letteratura. Per cui in questo lavoro, dopo una breve introduzione storica, analizzo alcuni romanzi che affrontano il tema del conflitto e degli effetti che ha avuto sui civili colpiti. Attraverso i diversi racconti abbiamo la possibilità di osservare la sensibilità umana e il modo in cui gli individui reagiscono a un evento tanto violento e drammatico. Infatti, la letteratura è uno strumento particolarmente efficace per recuperare gli aspetti più umani della guerra e attraverso il quale è possibile dar voce alla sofferenza dei sopravvissuti, prendendo atto delle modalità e delle strategie con cui le persone reagiscono al trauma e al dolore. In questo lavoro di ricerca ho messo a confronto fonti storiche, letterarie e scientifiche per cercare di far emergere un quadro ampio e approfondito di ciò che accade durante e dopo la fine del conflitto. L’obbiettivo della mia tesi è quindi quello di analizzare questo periodo non solo attraverso i documenti storici e scientifici, ma anche con l’ausilio di testimonianze, componimenti e libri in cui ritrovare le parole di coloro che in prima persona hanno vissuto il conflitto. Purtroppo, durante una guerra, dietro ogni trattato, report e atto ufficiale si cela sempre la vita delle vittime civili ed è per questo che sono fermamente convinta che sia necessario partire dalle loro storie per andare oltre il racconto istituzionale. Attraverso questo lavoro cerco di mettere in luce come la letteratura, intrecciata alla storia e alla scienza, sia in grado di farci comprendere non solo gli aspetti più profondi del dolore e della sofferenza umana, ma anche la resilenza e il coraggio di chi vuole vivere per raccontare, nella speranza di non veder più ricommessi gli stessi errori.
