L'infermiere scolastico in Italia e nel mondo: una revisione della letteratura

ABSTRACT Introduction: The school nurse is an essential health expert who works in schools. He’s the health students’ promoter, manages their risks, and contributes to their overall well-being. School is the educational environment par excellence and therefore it should not only provide academic skills, but also health education and it should promote healthy lifestyles, especially for students with chronic diseases, in order to improve their quality of life. Health education, in fact, is an integral part of general education and for this reason it is important that it is provided by qualified health professionals such as school nurses. Objective: to examine and understand the function of the school nurse, analyzing its characteristics and comparing the skills of this professional figure in Italy and abroad. Materials and methods: A literature review was performed. The following databases were consulted: PubMed, Cinhal and Embase. In addition, the nursing magazines "L'infermiere" and "Nursing Foresight" were consulted, as well as the website of the National Federation of Nursing Orders and Professions (FNOPI). Results: in many European countries and around the world, the school nurse is considered the fundamental figure who deals with the health of students in a global way. In the United States, it protects the health of pupils and ensures school continuity for students with chronic conditions. In the United Kingdom, it is the intermediary between school and the health system and is also the element that supports families and students. In Europe, it promotes school health by intervening in bullying and emergency situations; then, it promotes healthy lifestyles. In Italy there is no specific figure of school nurse. However, their role is filled by the Family and Community Nurse (IFEC) or the Pediatric Nurse. The current goal is to integrate a specialist dedicated to the care and protect the school population. Conclusions: the review clearly shows that, in many European countries and in the rest of the world, the school nurse is an indispensable promoter of the health of children and teenagers. In Europe and the United States, this figure is widely used and regulated. In English-speaking countries, the school nurse has been active since 2005 and 2007. In Italy its presence is limited, but projects are being developed to expand this figure. The inclusion of this figure in Italian schools could open up new professional prospectives and offer a contribution to health promotion and disease prevention among the new generations. ABSTRACT Introduzione: l'infermiere scolastico è un professionista sanitario essenziale nelle scuole, in quanto promuove la salute degli studenti, ne gestisce i rischi e contribuisce al loro benessere complessivo. La scuola è il contesto educativo per eccellenza e per questo non deve solo fornire competenze accademiche, ma anche l’educazione sanitaria e la promozione di stili di vita sani, soprattutto per gli studenti con patologie croniche, al fine di migliorare la loro qualità di vita. L'educazione sanitaria, infatti, è parte integrante dell'educazione generale e per questo è importante che sia erogata da professionisti sanitari qualificati come gli infermieri scolastici. Obiettivo: esaminare e comprendere la funzione dell’infermiere scolastico, analizzandone le caratteristiche e confrontando le competenze di questa figura professionale in Italia e all’estero. Materiali e metodi: è stata eseguita una revisione della letteratura. Sono state consultate le banche dati: PubMed, Cinhal e Embase. Inoltre, sono state consultate le riviste infermieristiche “L’infermiere” e “Nursing Foresight”, e il sito della Federazione Nazionale degli Ordini e Professioni Infermieristiche (FNOPI). Risultati: in molti Paesi europei e nel mondo, l'infermiere scolastico è considerato la figura fondamentale che si occupa in maniera globale della salute degli studenti. Negli Stati Uniti, protegge la salute degli alunni e assicura continuità scolastica agli studenti con patologie croniche. Nel Regno Unito è l’intermediario tra scuola e sistema sanitario ed è, inoltre, l’elemento che supporta le famiglie e gli studenti. In Europa promuove la salute scolastica intervenendo in situazioni di bullismo e di emergenza; infine promuove stili di vita sani. In Italia non esiste la figura specifica di infermiere scolastico. Tuttavia, il suo ruolo è ricoperto dall'infermiere di famiglia e comunità (IFEC) o dall'infermiere pediatrico. L’obiettivo attuale è quello di integrare all'interno delle scuole uno specialista dedicato alla cura e alla tutela della popolazione scolastica. Conclusioni: dalla revisione emerge chiaramente come, in molti Paesi europei e nel resto del mondo, l’infermiere scolastico sia un promotore indispensabile della salute dei bambini e degli adolescenti. In Europa e negli Stati Uniti questa figura è ampiamente diffusa e regolamentata. Nei Paesi anglofoni l'infermiere scolastico è attivo dal 2005 e dal 2007. In Italia la sua presenza è limitata, ma si stanno sviluppando progetti per ampliare questa figura. L’inserimento di questa figura nelle scuole italiane potrebbe aprire nuove prospettive professionali e offrire un contributo alla promozione della salute e alla prevenzione delle malattie tra le nuove generazioni.
