Donne nelle Narrative di Supereroi: Rappresentazione Negativa negli Universi Trasmediali di Marvel e DC e il Percorso verso l'Uguaglianza con Wonder Woman e Captain Marvel

Superhero narratives have been part of society's cultural background since the late 1930s and are still to this day a prosperous genre that has even expanded across different media. They have been widely underestimated as a form of entertainment mostly addressed to children and teenagers and their tumultuous path towards affirmation has had considerable repercussions on the themes treated, on their popularity, and even on more specific aspects, such as the representation of their female characters. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze how women have been conspicuously misrepresented in superhero narratives throughout the decades and question whether the situation is nowadays gradually improving. By tracing the development of Marvel and DC, the two major producers of these narratives and movies, the thesis outlines the cultural and historical factors which affected the evolution of the genre itself. In turn, these aspects have often strongly influenced the stereotypical and negative portrayals of women in comic books and movies, which are analyzed in this dissertation through their transformation throughout the decades, the main tropes employed in the different media, and practical examples from the narratives. Moreover, it briefly examines the evolution in the depiction of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, the first two superheroines to obtain their solo movies by the two franchises, and how their cinematic debut has caused a new wave of interest concerning the need for a more positive and inspirational representation of women in this genre.

Le narrative incentrate sui supereroi sono state parte del background culturale della società dalla fine degli anni 1930 e sono ancora al giorno d'oggi un genere molto prospero, che si è anche esteso a diversi media. Questi racconti spesso sono stati svalutati come una mera fonte di intrattenimento per bambini e adolescenti, e il loro tumultuoso percorso verso l'affermazione ha avuto considerevoli ripercussioni sui temi che trattavano, sul loro successo con i lettori, e su aspetti più specifici come la raffigurazione dei personaggi femminili. L'obiettivo di questa dissertazione è analizzare i modi in cui le donne sono state per decenni mal rappresentate nelle narrative incentrate sui supereroi, e discutere se la situazione al giorno d'oggi stia gradualmente migliorando. Tracciando lo sviluppo di Marvel e DC, i due più grandi produttori di questi racconti e film, questa tesi mostrerà i fattori storici e culturali che hanno avuto un impatto sull'evoluzione de genere stesso. A loro volta, questi aspetti hanno spesso influenzato le negative e stereotipate raffigurazioni delle donne sia nei fumetti sia nei film, che verranno analizzate attraverso i loro cambiamenti nel tempo, i principali cliché utilizzati nei diversi media, ed esempi pratici presi dalle diverse narrative. Inoltre, verrà brevemente analizzata l'evoluzione nella rappresentazione di Wonder Woman e Captain Marvel, ossia le prime due supereroine ad ottenere un film in cui sono le sole protagoniste, e il modo in cui il loro debutto cinematografico ha suscitato un nuovo interesse sull'importanza di avere anche in questo genere personaggi femminili in ruoli positivi e d'ispirazione per i lettori e il pubblico.
