The main sources of gravitational waves are known to be binary systems of black holes and neutron stars. Parameter estimation - that is, the process of inferring the source properties from the raw LIGO/Virgo data - is an extremely delicate and complicated process, which could in principle be plagued by systematic errors due to modelling choices. This work is aimed at analyzing such systematics for binary neutron stars (BNS) systems: after quantifying the impact that the neutron star crust equation of state has on the radius estimate, I will work towards improving the performance of TEOBResumS, a state of the art semi-analytical effective one body approximant "informed" by numerical relativity simulations. Finally, in the appendix, I will present two ongoing investigations: first, I will summarize our efforts towards quantifying the effects of waveform systematics on the recovery of tidal parameters for BNS systems; then, I will present the ingredients needed for including precessional effects in TEOBResumS.
