Analisi antropologica della stregoneria tra Europa e Sicilia: 'nserre, fattucchiere e donne di fuora

The main purpose of this dissertation is to analyse from an anthropological point of view the roots of European witchcraft and its subsequent developments, paying particular attention to Sicily. The research method used during the draft of this dissertation includes a careful reading of several books about witchcraft and the gathering of information about this topic obtained through a series of interviews made by me in Sicily. The result obtained from the combination of these two methods provides an insight into this topic from an overall view to a more detailed one, which focuses mainly on Sicilian popular culture. The first chapter recounts the origins of European witchcraft and its subsequent developments, emphasizing crucial events like the witch-hunt and the concept of witch. On the other hand, the second chapter places the accent on Sicilian witchcraft. This chapter describes the main characteristics of this phenomenon, which is widespread in the Sicilian folklore. Above all, the primary focus is on the several types of witches existing in the region, the skills they have and how to defend from them. The third chapter contains the different stories of those who were interviewed by me. What emerges from the gathering of this information is that the belief in magic and witchcraft is still relevant, although it has changed over time. As a matter of fact, we can deduce that this old phenomenon still exists in the Sicilian popular culture, and it will probably continue to evolve and be present in the future.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di analizzare da un punto di vista antropologico le origini e i successivi sviluppi della stregoneria in Europa, ponendo una maggiore attenzione sul territorio siciliano. Il metodo di ricerca utilizzato per la stesura di questo elaborato combina un'attenta lettura di più libri che affrontano il tema della stregoneria e la raccolta di testimonianze al riguardo ottenuta attraverso una serie di interviste realizzate da me in Sicilia. Dunque, il prodotto ottenuto dalla combinazione dei due metodi di ricerca permette di conoscere questa tematica a partire da una visione generale fino a una particolare che si focalizza maggiormente sulla cultura popolare siciliana. Nel primo capitolo vengono esposte le origini della stregoneria in Europa e i suoi successivi sviluppi, mettendo in rilievo eventi di notevole importanza quali ad esempio la caccia alle streghe e la concezione di strega. Nel secondo capitolo l'accento è posto invece sulla stregoneria in Sicilia. All'interno di questo capitolo vengono delineate le caratteristiche principali di questo fenomeno molto diffuso nel folklore siciliano. In particolar modo sono descritte le molteplici tipologie di streghe del territorio, le abilità che possedevano queste figure e i metodi per potersi difendere da esse. Nel terzo capitolo sono state invece inserite le varie testimonianze di soggetti da me intervistati. Ciò che emerge dalle informazioni raccolte è una credenza nella magia e nella stregoneria ancora attuale, seppur mutata nel corso del tempo. Infatti, si può dedurre che questo fenomeno così antico esista ancora nella cultura popolare dell'isola e probabilmente continuerà ad evolversi ed essere presente anche in futuro.
