Il Teatro dell'attesa: un'analisi dell'assurdo in Ionesco e Beckett

This thesis aims to analyse two plays: Eugène Ionesco's "Les Chaises" and Samuel Beckett's "En attendant Godot". Both exponents of the theatre of the absurd, they seek to represent through their theatre the irrationality of the human condition and the existential emptiness felt by human beings following the catastrophic events of the Second World War. This study envisages a comparison of the two works, which will be analysed in parallel, trying to bring out the common themes, but also the divergences in the thought of the two authors. Particularly relevant among these, and the subject of this study, is waiting. In the beginning we will analyse the context in which these works originate, followed by the events and protagonists that characterise them. Then we will focus on the dialogues, gestures and captions which, as we shall see, constitute a rupture with the previous theatre genre. And finally, we will look for possible answers and solutions to an existential void that is left in the characters and in the audience as a result of an awaiting that is never really fulfilled.

Questa tesi si pone come obiettivo l’analisi di due opere teatrali: “Les Chaises” di Eugène Ionesco e “En attendant Godot” di Samuel Beckett. Entrambi esponenti del teatro dell’assurdo, essi cercano di rappresentare attraverso il loro teatro l’irrazionale della condizione umana e il vuoto esistenziale provato dall’essere umano a seguito degli eventi catastrofici della seconda guerra mondiale. Questo studio prevede una messa a confronto delle due opere, che verranno analizzate in modo parallelo cercando di far emergere le tematiche comuni, ma anche le divergenze nel pensiero dei due autori. Tra queste particolarmente rilevante, e oggetto di questo studio, è l’attesa. Nella prima parte analizzeremo il contesto in cui nascono queste opere, seguito dalle vicende e i personaggi che le caratterizzano. Nella seconda parte ci concentreremo sui dialoghi, sulla gestualità e sulle didascalie che, come vedremo, costituiscono un elemento di rottura rispetto al teatro precedente. E infine cercheremo delle possibili risposte e soluzioni rispetto ad un vuoto esistenzale che viene lasciato nei personaggi e nello spettatore a seguito di un attesa che non viene mai realmente colmata.
